There is a commercial version of Tom's guard design, although they're rarely seen anymore. Those do offer protection if you can find (or build) one. The two-piece designs really only offer protection IMO if the bike falls over when parked or is moving slowly. I had a set on one bike, had a low-speed tip-over and it not only broke the sidecover but broke a couple of fins on the cylinder. Last time I used them...
'Back in the day' the one-piece were still being shunned by most motorcyclists as they had a reputation for getting hooked on car bumpers (before everything had molded-in plastic bumper covers) in an accident, resulting in the bike (and sometimes rider) getting dragged down the road... not good. Not much of an issue today.

The screw holes at the 9:00, 11:00 and 1:00 positions on the generator cover are all repaired with JB Weld. Maybe not the best way to fix it, however they have been holding fine for 5+ years now. I just smoothed it out with a wet finger tip when I applied the putty. You have to look close to see the fix.
Looking at your hydraulic clutch made me remember how much easier my clutch lever was even-after installing Barnett HD springs. Actually, it feels almost easier to pull now.

where I'd you get the hydraulic clutch mod, by the way? Have you already posted about it? It looks nice.... They introduced it on the later Yamahas. My XJR is notorious for needing the slave seal replaced. Mine needed doing aer only 2,000 miles!

I followed the clutch mod thread by 81xsproject. The slave cylinder used is from a 86-1997 Honda VFR 700 & 750F. I did do the rod that connects the slave piston to the clutch differently. Do to my "CRS" however, I would have to take a look at it to tell you what I did. I also added a slight step on the edge of the cover plate just for decoration.
On the same cover the issue I had was the screw threads stripped out and there is a hair-line crack on the top of mine. My fix-since I use taps and Heli-coils at work all the time,I got a 1/4 20 Heli-coil and put that in and its a solid repair. I've learned the hard way of cranking screws and bolts on too tight.
