  • Paint Codes please

I know that it's impossible to find orginal paint colors/code for these awesome bikes.
So, To all of those that have painted their bikes as close to matching the original paint colors, please post up here what paint (brand and code) you used to get that 'almost' factory match.
I figure if we gather enough different colors, then a moderator could edit this thread and make it a tech tip listing the different color 'matches' that are currently available.
I'm hoping for a list of the more common/easier to obtain colors, rather than those that have to be 'special' ordered form on-line paint sites.
One example is the Indigo Blue:
    Carbon Blue-Black-effect... 2000 Toyota, code210
I don't want guesses, I want true input from those that have painted it, or have actually seen it with your own 2 eyes.

Here's a list of all the US colors that were out there:

    1978 XS 1100 E 2H7 Macho Maron
    1979 XS 1100 F 2H7 Indigo Blue, Magenta Red
1979 XS 1100 SF 3H3 Black Gold, Carmine Red

No guessin' here!.....................The Carbon Blue-Black effect is a single-stage paint. Re-painted the side-covers on my 81Venturer after sanding them down to the base plastic. Painted with primer for plastics prior to color. ALL paint was from an automotive paint store.
If doing tank, you'd have to clear-coat for fuel protection. I had splashed a bit of fuel from lines removeng tank on one cover, which dulled paint by time I saw it. Used Meguiar's #2 fine-cut cleaner that brought the gloss back to paint.

The three colors that seem to be the hardest to match are the '78-79 'standard' colors (and the later bikes that used the same). I have yet to see a perfect match, or even that close under all lighting conditions because these colors can change 'brightness/intensity' so radically depending on the light. Under bright sunlight, they can almost 'glow' but under overcast skies or artificial light can appear somewhat lifeless. That's one of the hang-ups as to why I haven't finished my restoration on my bought-new '78; no one will guarantee a perfect match, and I don't want to shell out big $$ for 'close' or almost perfect.

If someone has success, I'd love to hear about it....

006G is the code from Color Rite for the New Yamaha Black. I have ordered from them and the paint is a base and clear coat combination and is spot on.

          Paint

I will be seeing my guy on the weekend and will talk to him about the powder coat formulas. I know what Steve is talking about. I wanted to go back to Macho Maroon for my 78 but no one could match it. I've selected a different colour all together now. It's called "Madagascar Gold" and I'll use black pin stripping on it. Looked dull in side and on a cloudy day but pops in the sunlight. Not sure if I like it yet but it is what it is. I had a fairing and hard bags done with it so , it is what it is.

            I found this site:
            https://www.twowheelparts.nl/en/pain...rpaint/yamaha/

Which is in UK that claims to be able to mix all the Yamaha colorcodes. This includes Cardinal Red (CDR) which has been very difficult to find.

I don't know if this can be used as a reference or not but it seems to provide a uniform source for the paints. I know nothing about the quality but I will probably buy from them unless I find a better source.

I've gotta ask why you guys are gambling with mail order colors and not taking your parts to an automotive paint supplier which will computer match any color ?

Also they'll most likely be able to give expert advice on products and application.
1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
                  1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)

I ended up with the small container of code 210 as I only have a couple of small deep scratches on my rear cowl ( from a rack PO had carelessly put on and taken off a time or two). The scratches are clean and thin and sort of deep, and only need a small amount of paint to more or less fill the marks. Upshot is, not enough surface to worry about, and the spot is very inconspicuous.

It's legal to import the paint as long as the quantities are low. Usually the amount to paint a tank and side panels is well below the limit. It takes a week for them to get to a US address.

I agree that a paint match is the best way to go for touch-ups. However, I have a bike with four layers of paint on it and I can't trust the base layer to still have the right shade of red. This is why on a previous thread I was asking if anyone had a source for a match.

There's also the problem with age. Most of the paints from the late 70s to early 80s where not the best for maintaining color. Since I have to paint the whole thing anyway, I'm looking to recreate the original shade and depth only with a modern paint.

OK-- Not a good match on the Carbon Blue-Black-effect... 2000 Toyota, code210. Ended up that it was too far off color match, especially for a job more than a scratch filler. Will now order YAMAHA 004E INDIGO BLUE by color-rite.

                            http://www.amazon.com/ColorRite-YAMA.../dp/B00BSGGWX4

Pretty small area on rear cowl to treat. Should be all-good.

                              Paint

I earlier posted the two 1980 colors. I had them professionally mixed at a body shop. Not the cheapest way to get paint matched, but it appears to be the surest way and best match.

I will eventually need the 1979 Indigo blue as well.
