Mirror Upgrade

Age

I would gladly trade much of long forgotten knowledge and both mirrors to be 23 again, mistakes ahead of me and all. But one thing to remember the ground is hard at any age. I' am a little jealous. On subject, I put Rizoma mirrors on Carbon and there as steady as a cars. Pricey though.

Then, to cap it all, you now state that members of this forum "all have a reputation...to be pretty dickish"

I find it all totally strange, Mr Murphy, unpleasant and gratuitous. So, I for one will henceforth be ignoring any posts you make, regardless of what you say in them. Yes, you can have the last word, as far as I'm concerned, so please do feel free to fire away.

Anyway, back to something interesting and constructive....re mirrors.. I had some small fancy looking ones which turned out to be completely useless as devices for looking backwards...too prone to vibration and too small. So I bought these off eBay. They are copies of OEM and give a clear, vibration free rear view....

i removed the OEM ones and sold them on ebay. Then bought the small 'designer' ones. Then soon realised my mistake! Forget the appearance...a good clear view behind is worth more than appearance. I couldn't identify police cars and that bothered me......just blurs. All now sorted out though. They weren't at all expensive either and are actually just about as good as OEM...maybe 90% in terms of build quality and 100% in terms of performance.....

In some states mirrors are not a choice. It's the law. In mine, I have to have at least one.

First and foremost, realize that I only want what is most likely to let you enjoy your riding experience as much as possible, and at the same time limit as much as possible the likelihood you end up a statistic on the traffic reports, or a post in the "In Memoriam" section of the site. Over my years here I have seen WAY to many good people, excellent riders, and smart experienced folks become just that while riding their machines.

That said, I would have thought the answer to your inquiry quite obvious, especially to someone of your stated wealth of knowledge and experience.....for you to attach and use mirrors on your bike.

You see, mirrors give you a view of more area than you can look at, much the same as your peripheral vision does. In fact, they expand the area your peripheral vision covers quite extensively.

Now, back to you inquiry Ian, I have a set on my SG now, I used to have on my SH, that are rectangular and black plastic, with black mounting rods. I think some one once told me they may have been from an LH. All I know is the fit well and have the right threading on both.

Well, I thought my post covered the community's voice, but I guess I understand, lol. Anywho. . . I picked-up some rectangle mirrors made by BikeMaster, very similar to XJ mirrors. I hope there is no vibration. $10/mirror. Put those on, get the headlight finished, track-down the oil leak, melt the snow, elevate the temps, and I'm good to ride.

Well Folks,

Murphy has left the building....for good. Since he's no longer a member, I'll post the PM he sent just for evidence of why his membership was cancelled. Due to his 40 posts, his account still shows...it messes up the databases if I just DELETE his account, but his password has been changed, his email address has been removed from his PROFILE so that the site will not send any notices to him incase he had any threads "followed".

Hey TC. you can go ahead and delete my profile. I'm done with all these guys James England included. Not once have I made a personal stab at anyone and yet that's all I get on this site. I was warned by the dotheton guys and yet thought it'd be cool. All I've seen from this site is degradation. Even when I'm simply being playful and making a joke about mirrors? Are you serious? Then it all comes down to i'm young and immature. So thanks for the friendly responses I've gotten from you but clearly you have plenty of people on here that are blind to the type of remarks they make and also to the reputation your forum members have created for you. I figured forums were for collective thoughts on bettering their common interests. I was even pm'd about James, go figure. Thanks anyway.

As has been shown by the recent HOW OLD ARE WE thread, a majority of us are "old fartz". The Youngins have usually learned of our humor style, as well as our concern for member's safety in general. It's sad that he's taken our comments the wrong way. His account is still there and can be reactivated by just an EMAIL request to the CONTACT US link if he so desires.

I didn't want to stimulate folks to go on a BASHING fest after seeing his PM, so please don't hit him with the door on his way out.

I still like my Virago mirrors.

Great for rearward vision.

Nope, no bashing needed. There are no kids on the forum. His posts screamed "hey look at me, I want attention." He claimed irritance by his age being brought-up, but included it in his signature with illegal speeds next to it. Oh man, sooo cool!! It's over and done with. We move on.

I've enjoyed the rock steady view at any speed with the same stock mirrors on my '83 XJ 750 Mid Max.

T.C., I agree. This got far too serious over essentially nothing...

James, it's obvious you've never rode any Harley. On a pre-'04 rigid-mount-motor Sportster with factory long-stem mirrors on it, those mirrors are pretty much just there for decoration and to keep the LEOs at bay. You can't see a damn thing in them most of time, in fact they're famous for breaking off... Even the Harley short-stems (which will stay on) aren't much better. And I well remember the bikes of my youth (1 and 2 cylinder models) where objects in the mirrors were just colored smears... That was one of the things that impressed me about the XS when I bought mine; mirrors you could actually see things in and tell what they were...

While I believe in promoting safety while riding, ultimately it's personal choice. And being a bit of a wise-a$$ isn't a crime....
