Oil Leak Location?

I believe I found the oil leak location just now: a stripped-out oil pan cap screw near the drain bolt. The screw is not stripped, the hole is. I ran a tap through it, a slightly longer bolt and threw some Gasket sealer on the threads and screw head. No leaks after changing the oil and running it.

However, I did find a much BIGGER leak in my garage this morning before fixing that leak. HUGE puddle of oil right in the middle of the bike. WTF!!! Yesterday, before I left for work I checked the sight glass and saw no oil. So, I put about another 3/4 quart in the bike till it showed in the sight glass. Weird, as I assumed there was enough oil in there. Oh well. Got to work, put bike on center stand. Went out and checked the bike, huge oil puddle. Looked at sight glass, and it was full. Over-filled it? Got home and parked it. This morning was same result. I realized that the oil was coming from the crankcase overfill tube. So, why the oil did not show in the window despite being on the centerstand? Who knows. New oil at correct level now, with no leaks so far . . .

Ian, if you check oil right after riding it would appear empty, but give it few minutes to drain to the pan, and level goes back to normal

had a panic attack after one of my first rides, when glass sight appeared empty

of course make sure you're level and on centerstand, duh

Actually, it can take all night for the level to be accurate. There is quite a bit of oil knocking around at the top of the engine, I always leave my bike undisturbed for at least 12 hours before checking the oil level. Also, even a slight incline on the ground the bike is sitting on can make a difference. Overfilling is much worse than underfilling, IMO.

No, the bike was chillin' for about 30 minutes. Not a single spot of oil today. However I have a charging issue to chase down.,

Mine started to leak like that.. then got worse. It was the base gasket seeping. We were on a trip, so as a quick fix, in the hotel parking lot, I used a can of carb cleaner to clean all the grease/oil off, then put a bead of clear silicone across the front of the base gasket and smeared it flat with my finger. Hasn't leaked a bit since, so haven't felt the need for a more permanent solution.

There's no oil pressure there, so anything that will plug up the hole will work if that's the culprit.

I don't see any oil on the cylinder fins or anywhere on the engine except the bottom, so it's with great hope that the stripped bolt and excessive oil was the culprit.

nobody mentioned leaking float pins and/or petcocks
                is that a possibility?

Are you checking the oil with the bike level, not on the side stand?
