  • Carb help!

Okay so i started the bike up today...full choke fired right up...
Now it started leaking gas from the exhaust where the headers meet the muffler and it was coming out of the airbox...
If i put if half choke or no choke it died...

    What would cause this?
Bikes only been sitting about a year..

You're running on 3 cylinders. The cylinder that is down has a stuck float or set to the wrong height. Find the cold pipe and you've found your culprit.

If you have that much gas pouring out don't run it anymore until you free up the floats and change the oil. When did you clean and set your carbs last?

        Remove the carbs

Take them off the bike and do a clean on them. You are probably not that far off with them but a thorough cleaning would not hurt them. It is usually the first place to start on these bikes. Even with only setting up a year the gas in them is old and there could be some build up in the bowls around the float pins and float needle assemblies. Sounds like you do have either a float stuck wide open or the needle assembly on one carb is not doing it's job. Search for triple clean here and follow those steps to give the carbs a good clean. Be careful soaking anything because the rubber o rings and seals can be damaged. If you do decide to really dig into them you should find some berry's carb cleaner. The gallon can if you can get it. It is good stuff but be warned it can remove paint and your carbs are painted black.

            invest in

you will need a good impact hammer to get screws and bolts loose. If you don't have one it is worth the investment. It can sometimes be the difference in messing up a screw or not. It will depend on how long it has been since the carbs were taken apart. If it's been a while the screws could be a tad hard to loosen up.

The carbs can be EXTREMELY frustrating. Be sure ALL passages are clear and clean. There's no need to separate them but take them completely apart and clean, clean, clean.

The enricher plungers are normally OK.

You will need to sync them when you reinstall them so gauges will be needed. There may be someone nearby that can help.

When i looked at the floats 2 were stuck and 2 were good..
I took pictures..1 of the good float and 1 of the bad green float...assume the green is corrosion of the brass?
Also is this the right type of air filter for it?

You've got some cleanin' to do there Sparky. That green stuff is corrosion from moisture. There is going to be a lot more that you can't see than that you can. It'll be clogging every passage and orifice.

That's a reusable foam UNI air filter. I have one in my bike. Wash it out and dampen it with some oil.

Oh yea, those need to be cleaned BAD. Go buy yourself a good extractor set with left handed drill bits (you're gonna need it). I recently got a set of carbs that looked like those and it took me a week to rebuild them (each carb dipped for 24 hours each). If you have access to a drill press I'd take those caps off of your idle mixture screws and take them out because they're most likely plugged beyond belief. It's a dangerous road and it's easy to mess up (I junked the set of carbs before my latest set) but 100% worth it when you have a fully restored set.

The guys on here can help you with suggestions as you get to each step but it'll be some trail and error. A simple blasting of compressed air won't usually do it when they're this gummed up. You can always take them to your local shop and have them do a rebuild but after parts and labor it'll be quite pricey. Who knows Mack might be able to clean them for you too (he's good at it) and he's a Canada native like yourself.

BEFORE.....YES BEFORE you try to remove any of the jets or internal parts, read the carb cleaning thread over and over. Also..BEFORE you try to remove the parts, get some PB Blaster and spray down every single part. Soak it well first. Then use a screw driver that fits the jets TIGHTLY. That will keep you from tearing up the jets instead of stripping the slots out.
