  • Aftermarket Valve Springs

I was at the motorcycle shop the other day when I bought the shocks, and noticed that they had an aftermarket box of valve springs and keepers from whenever. I think it said that they were heavy duty. The box was marked somewhere around $90. They were New In Box. Anybody have any interest in these?

Hey Phil. Yes sir. If anybody is actually interested, I will go back tomorrow and take pics of the packaging. If I remember right, it was a red, blue, and white box. Everything was there.

I would be interested if I could get a set of valves to go with it...

I've been wanting to redo my heads because there's a local place in town that I can just bring the heads to and they'll put new valves+springs in it for me. I don't need them to set valve clearance because I can do that myself. I'm just too scared to take out the valves/lap them/port the head/etc.

Well, I see there is a site that sells springs for less than $60, so I'm not sure how great of a deal those are, etc. Not too many machine shops that do head work are going to turn down a job, regardless if it's an XS11 or whatever. If you walk into a machine shop anywhere near a city that manufactures cars, you'll be walking into a shop full of cylinder heads as far as the eye can see.

And, the reason for the head work is . . . ?

Oh, I know! So, you won't be so far back in my mirrors on the track!!!

You know I sold the FZR to win this match and I'm not about to lose to no stock setup! What's another couple hundred dollars in head work for bragging rights?

Valve springs by themselves usually won't give any performance increase unless the stock ones are bad. Ignition/cam timing will control where peak power is, so unless you change those to move the power curve higher in RPM and beyond the range of the stock springs they won't be needed. One exception may be endurance racing, but for street use they may cost you power by increasing frictional losses.

As always Steve, most helpful. I changed mine because my originals just didn't measure up.
