  • Cool Little Fix for Broken Left Side Covers

So I got a set of side cover from IanMac (I believe) but the left side had a broken tab like we see so many times. After scouring the interwebs and finding myself disgusted with the prices people were asking for side cover that were intact I decided to get a little creative.

I had some aluminum angle bracket leftover from working on mounting an 883 sportster seat on my '79 so I fabbed a little bracket up that makes for a VERY nice replacement. It holds the cover on very snuggly and I'm sure is way more durable than the original plastic tab. If there is enough interest I'll draw up a tutorial explaining the dimensions and how I made one. It's a bit more complicated than what meets the eye because aluminum puts up a fit when you try to bend it a steep angles.

          Then there is this fix...

I know it may cost a little more than your fix, but it is a permanent fix.

That looks really good! If I could mill worth a damn I'd love to make something like that. Alas, I have to settle for my $0.25 fix.

It's attached with JB Weld. It's holding up really nicely and the aluminum tab will bend along before that bond breaks. As far as the hole, I have no idea...it just came with the side cover.

I made one about 10 years ago, but I didn't get it perfect to get the top mount points good when the tab is inserted. It works OK, but pay attention to that detail.

Great job. Old plastic parts are extra frustrating. If you find a used plastic part chances are its overpriced- partially broken and due to age- brittle. I like low cost do it yourself repairs.
