I had mine turning 8000 in forth gear while climbing Pine Mountain. I rolled off the throttle and crested the hill at less than 60 mph. A state trooper was waiting at the top. Lucky day.
I can't get 8K in 4th gear either, I have an 850FD so 4th is the same as 5th with a stock FD. Running the twisties in NC I'm in 3rd or even 2nd most of the time.

my 79 sf warms up faster than my 80 sg. The 80 carbs have a leaner mixture screw setting from the factory than do the 79,s. Any one else on this one ?

It all depends on your float/fuel level determining the engine's 'cold bloodedness' when cold starting. Also, if your carbs have leaky float valves, more fuel will drain down in the bowls from the lines/filters when the bike is shut off causing a cold 'no enricher needed' starting condition.
It is funny how our expectations change. I am now looking for smoother idle and better mpg...a few months ago, I would have been delighted with "starts."

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.
The bike idles great when warm. When I crack the throttle a tiny bit off of idle, it spits a time or two, but runs well after I get going. I can't help thinking she's a too rich, but my plugs say only a tad rich or normal.
Should I pursue synching again, float height, or something else? The engine and carbs are as stock as possible for a 45 year old bike.

How old are your plugs? I need to put new plugs in every year or it'll start doing that.

Just so y'all know, my initial investigation revealed a split in the vacuum advance hose. I guess at low vac levels, the advance would not move and the bike sputtered; at higher vac, it ran okay.

Glad you found the problem Larry! Could of been a tad lean on #2 from that split also. May wanna reset idle mixes and re-sync.

I took the timing cover off and it was split in there, too. Replacing the hose improved things, but I'll bet the timing cover split existed when I tuned the carbs. Where's that damned Carbtune? Oh yeah, still attached to the Kawi that will never run....
