    Since there is brass already on there, you should continue the repair with it. A crack will continue to grow when heated. Drill a small hole at the end of the crack and continue to braze until sealed. The hole will stop the crack. Use just enough torch heat to melt the brass. A lot of people try to braze with too much heat.

      I helped a friend where his tank was rusty with pinholes and the metal being very thin due to rust. We de rusted the inside real good then fiberglassed the compromised bottom. Blended the glass and filler then lined the tank with a coating because fiberglass is not ethanol proof. Took some time and work but is holding up and looks great.
