  • Replacement of Clutch Springs/Plates

    I'm gathering up my shopping list for the bike. I do know that I had some clutch slipping at high speed. So, should I just go ahead and buy the plates and springs and get it over with? If I get into this following TC's great write-up, I'd rather just knock it out instead of leaving things un-done.

    Most everyone finds the friction discs to still be in spec. Just putting the Barnett springs in are usually enough.

    DO NOT USE EBC SPRINGS! They are weak to start with.

        Springs are usually all it needs Ian. Barnetts are what I recommend. Part # 501-58-06045

          While youre in there you may as well clean up the steels and frictions with some sandpaper. New springs and cleaning plates wont guarantee a fix though. I put in Barnett HD springs, cleaned the plates (still in spec) and it still slips when I get on it hard.

                Clutch

                I also used barnett hd springs and plates with mobile 1 motorcycle
                racing oil and have no problem with slippage and i ride hard.

                  I use Barnett springs and stock frictions in an engine that came out of an F parts bike from Bob Jones' "pile-o-parts" (the only one out of 8 I bought at the last memorial Bob Jones Memorial Rally that would turn over) with Wally World house brand 20W50 and I CAN'T MAKE the clutch slip.

                    I've read some fellas put some washers on the clutch bolts to strengthen up the weak springs. That would be the cheapest way. My clutch just started slipping today, hmmm.

                        Yeah, I've read through many posts regarding the EBC springs (including Nate's above), and was advised to stay away from those. They come too short, and are weak. I'll be going for some Barnett springs. Not sure I want HD springs though, as I hate a still clutch, and love the hydraulic clutches on my other bikes.

                              I agree with others about Barnett, HD springs are what I used, only notice the stiffer lever for a week or so. Not a problem unless your going to drive 40 miles in stop and go traffic.

                              I also bought cheap friction plates from parts-n-more for about $40 and put them in after I roughed up the stock steels with some ~250 grit sand paper. Clean the grit off with carb cleaner and reassemble. Its been 2 or 3 years now and still no slip, even after countless wheelies.
