personally,I've never bothered with the cable gadget. The cable scratches the paint from the lugs on the frame and then the frame rusts. Also, having that amount of firepower of compressed springs always bothered me, with hands in the way, fingers and so on.

I've always supported the rear wheel underneath and then removed the shockers, holding the swinging arm up with a piece of string. Easy to do and no springs under tension, waiting for something to happen that results in a finger on the floor!

I never used the wire thing, even on my brand new XS1100
XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. Progressive front springs. Geezer regulator/rectifier. Stainless 4 into 2 exhaust. Auto CCT (Venturer 1300) SOLD. New project now on the go. 1980 European model.

Interestinly enough, my Venturer came with the cable stashed underneath the registration flip cover. Could never figure out why that would be needed since the Venturer had the short upswept exhaust and the rear fender was hinged and raised up to remove rear wheel.
