Whats this on a 78E?

I just started cleaning up the E and notice under the battery box there is somekind of a keyed switch LOL don't mind me I am very new to this bike and its my first Yamie LOL!!

And this I why I joined this wonderful site of XS11's so I can bug you Guys.

I have the download version of Clamers Manual on the XS1100 but does not mention this doo-hicky is this somekind of antitheft device or power shut so it don't burn up LOL!

Hi Rick,
That is the key hole for the lockable side cover. Key only goes in about half way. Do you have a side cover? Does it still have the catch?

Yes I have the side cover but that probably would explain why the catch is broken off the cover I didn't think they locked probably so someone can't steal the battery right to much. Only the Japs would think of something like that LOL!!

Hi Rick,
If you do a search of the tech tips there are some ways of repairing the cover so it will once again lock.

Hi Rick-- On my first XS11, I, too, didn't know what the key lock was for. This was probably before I knew of XS11com., or even maybe before XS11.com was here (1987). I sort of forced the side cover off one time, and, well, enough said. You'd be amazed at how easily it comes off when you turn the key in the lock.

LOL Yah! It wouldn't take much to break em.

I went out to the garage to take some pictures of it

It looks like its been repaired heres some pics of it so the catch is still on correct me if I'm wrong or is there some parts missing to this as there looks like something was bolted on this side cover at one time on the inside above the catch.

I always assumed it was the toolbox that I was locking but yeah battery too

+1 with Tom about the toolkit. You wont get the battery out just from removing the sidecover (with the seat still fitted)

Mate, if you're referring to the two holes above the catch, they are for locating the bottom of the document holder that sits inside it.

^ As they sit facing into the back of the sidecover (sorry, don't have sidecover to sit it in to show that)


^ lugs on RHS plug into holes in sidecover. Catch on LHS clips under the top of the cover.

In the day that would be a good place to leave the Registration & Insurance slip if the side cover was in good shape for locking up..

Back in the day when speeding was the way we road my buddies and I would carry the license and registration in our leather riding jacket in an outside zippered pocket. That way when we got stopped by the police for speeding we had our license and registration out and ready for him. No fumbling around looking for it. We tried to be professional. Gave us a little satisfaction that we not only road a big mean bike ,had all the cool gear and were ready and expecting the ticket.
