  • Bad Oil Filter Bolts

    Hello Gang
I got a issue with "The Winter Project". Seem the oil filter bolt is rounded, and the PO cut a slot for a flat blade but it won't budge. Has anyone had to cut their filter housing to remove the bolt?

So you've tried the usual vice grips, pipe wrench, etc? If/when you get it off, Partsnmore.com has new ones for $17.

If you can get the bolt out without completely trashing it, they can be repaired and eliminate the problem of the too-small bolt head.

I've turned the existing head down to 1/2", reversed a 1/2" die and cut a short thread on it. Thread on a 1/2" nut (3/4"/19mm head) then braze the nut on. You do need to remove the check valve to do this so the heat doesn't destroy the spring, but you now have a larger head with better leverage for removal...

If you don't want to do this, always use a 6-point socket to change the filter, that helps a bunch....

A torque wrench isn't a bad idea either.

          Oil Filter Bolt

Definitely replace it or modify as suggested. If there is enough of the bolt head left, a stud remover tool might work.

May have to spot weld a nut onto the existing bolt head if all else fails.

            Thx, Guys
I do have the replacement parts. Was thinking I'd have to cut around the bolt to releive the pressure and spin it out. I'll see about a welder

Get yourself a wood chisel and a hammer.
Use the chisel and hammer to break the bolt loose. Hit in the direction to unscrew the bolt.

First bike was an: 1978 XS1100
              Second bike is an FJR1300.
              Now I'm restoring a '79 XS1100.

Not to change the subject, but is that a XJ seat on your XS?

I hate the seat on my XJ, most uncomfortable seat I've ever had on a motorcycle. I picked up another seat pan and I'm in the process of modifying it. Hopefully it will be better when I get done.

You'd never get a XJ seat to fit without extensive mods to both the seat and the frame, but that may be a XJ cover on a XS seat....

I've welded larger nuts to oil filter bolts on all my old bikes.

Seems like one of the requisites for all the used bikes I buy is overtorqued oil filter bolt with rounded off the edges.
