So I stripped the old paint on the tank I had questions about, sure enough it's a 1979 Special tank - carmine red. So I'm assuming a special seat is what I should look for?

What are the first three of the VIN? IF it is a standard frame, I do not think a special seat will fit it or the side covers correctly.

The vin states it's a 1980 standard, it currently has no side covers. I'm going to assume that someone in the distant past put a special tank and special headlight on the bike (as it has a round headlight)

I'd check the interchange guide Steve assembled, but I am pretty certain the Special seat may not have the right cavity in the right spot for the TCI on a Standard frame.

            Here's the seat guide.... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36552

Seats are a problem, as they really don't interchange very well between models unless you're ready to do some modifications. The '80-81 standard seat will be a bolt-on even with the Special tank, the '79 Special will be the next-closest fit (and very hard to find), the '78-79 standard and '80-81 Special will both require serious mods to the seat and/or the frame.

              Hi Hideki,
I checked out the photos in your build thread.
Looks like the dreaded PO lopped the back end off the frame.
Are the stock seat mount lugs still there or did Mr Helpful lop them off too?
Seems to me that as the stock parts are already gone you can re-build just about any way you want.
Note that IF you swap back to a Standard tank you are stuck with the Special tank's thermistor fuel level switch.
UNLESS you also switch to the Standard's square gauges.
