  • XS1100G Seat Question

I am trying to restore a 1980 XS11G and I'm looking for the correct seat. It is not a special model - bigger real wheel and had the longer exhaust pipes, but my tank looks like a special tank and not a standard... I'm actually confused to what the difference in XS11G tanks is? I see the earlier model standard tanks have slab sides and specials are teardrop shaped, are all 1980 tanks tear dropped shaped? I'm asking because I want to know what seat/side covers I should be hunting down? With that said if you have the correct seat I'm interested

The standard tanks all look the same (except the '81 h is a little taller) and all the special tanks look the same. The standard and special tanks interchange but the seat doesn't look right where it meets the tank.

Hey Hideki, Your not putting that cool mod bike you assembled back to stock are you? You did a great job on that unique creation.

As Nate indicated, all Standard tanks have the knee indents, stand up taller, almost squarish look to them. All Special tanks have that tear drop look (Special model was the move toward V-Twin look-a-likes). Sounds like someone swapped a special tank on your Standard.

The Seats is an area that gets more unique year to year and model to model. So I think the G seat is a one of. The 78-79 models had the rear seat cowl, and the H model I believe had a different frame as it uses Special exhaust and foot peg brackets.

Also if you use the mongo tank from the 81H you need the taller bars to clear the tank. (In case you go shopping for a tank)

Not exactly true. The 81 standand (H) has the same handlebars as the other standards. (same part number) You may need to adjust them to tilt up a little.
I put my G bars on my H and I need to tilt them up a little because the hazard switch just touches the tank at full turn.

That is surprising. It could be that my two 81E's had after-market bars. I am not the original owner of any of my bikes. When I put the 81H tank on the 78E, I had to tilt the bars at an angle beyond horizontal. For me it was unsightly and bad on the wrists...

I just got my H a few months ago and it had sport bars on it. (too small)
I put my G bars on it so it'd be somewhat normal.
Then I started seeing on the site about the H bars were different, and I thought maybe so, so I looked up the part numbers and viola, they are the same for all the standards.
I may end up getting risers or maybe some special bars to be able sit back a little more in the seat.

The H did have different bars from the factory. The thing to remember about the parts fiche is that is showing service replacement parts, not necessarily what was installed on the production line. You will find some bits listed as replacements that aren't exact duplicates of OEM, but will fit/function 'close enough' that Yamaha deleted the earlier version.

So Steve, you're telling me that there does exist bars that are supposed to be for the H?
If the other standard bars are good enough to fit, i wonder how different they are

The H did have slightly different bars as OEM; I remember them because of a conversation with a parts guy when they were introduced. IIRC, they had a bit more rise and were just a bit wider, but the same pullback.

Now, which 'version' they used as the service replacement is anybody's guess, although it was usually the newest one. Not an issue unless you're trying to do a 'perfect' restore, but there was more 'detail' differences between years than most realize....

Thanks for answering my questions, appears while the bike vin states it's a standard, someone had to of replaced the tank with a special tank. Now, does anyone have a 1980 special seat for sale (hopefully cheap)

Did you mean the Standard seat? I would need to refer to the interchange guide if the Special seat fits on the Standard.

If you are looking for a Special seat, the 80 or 81 Special seats will freely interchange and are all but identical as well.
