I picked up a set of roller bearings from one of the guys on the 650 list. I'm sure if you have a bearing supply house you can most likely get the same thing.
Requires drilling out the lever to fit the bearings the OD is the same the ID is not. If you can't find them I'd be glad to check the 650 list for who it was that had them. PM me. Done };~)
Anyone have a source for the brake and clutch lever bushings?
Mike
Hi Mike,
those levers got bushings? I swear mine just got holes drilled through them.
And yes, mine are worn all sloppy too.
Get bushings at your nearest bearing shop.
Ask for nylatron bushings.
Or go old-fashioned and ask for oilite bushings which are made from lube-filled sintered bronze.
Replace the pivot bolts at the same time, they will be worn too.

Yes, they are nylon bushings. A bearing in there would be an upgrade for sure. If you don't keep the lever pivots lubricated, the bushings will disappear and the (handle) holes will enlarge.

"What they do have is an implacable, unrelenting presence and movement that bespeaks massive power lurking behind paint and chrome. If you do have some levers with ovaled holes, and you can find some nylon bushings, a little JB Weld can be dribbled into the space around the bushing, and the lever is good to go another 100,000 miles. Clean the aluminum with acetone or equal to assure a bond to the inside of the hole.
Be aware that JB Weld will droop until it sets up, so make sure that it can't drain out the bottom of the gap. A piece of Scotch tape across the bottom will usually keep it in, and any that does get into the inside of the bushing can be pared out with an Exacto knife, or a drill bit, carefully applied.

I like the idea of the bearing... if you guys post a link I would appreciate it (even if its to the XS650 site). Thanks.

Turns out that in the past I have bought a couple of spare (OEM) brake/clutch levers. The holes for the pivot bolt, of course, are the same size as the originals - requiring that bushing.
So I ordered an aftermarket one form EBay (item number 360791825509) and found out that the pivot hole is smaller - perfect size to fit the pivot bolt. No bushing required. Problem solved!

Hi Mike, that explains it!
I bought my XS650 new and when the original levers got broken in minor collisions I threw them away and replaced them with the aftermarket levers the dealer had in stock.
I never thought to check if the stockers had bushings in them.
All the other Yamahas I've owned were far from new and they must all have had aftermarket replacement levers by the time they got to me.
However, the good fix when they have worn sloppy and oval is to drill out the holes 8mm diameter and press in 6mm bore x 8mm OD nylatron or oilite bushings and cut them the same height as the lever thickness.
AND install new pivot bolts, the old ones will be worn too.

That's because the 650 list is a bunch of old guys with CRS. We can't remember anything that far back.
Hi Marty,
speak for yourself, eh? Remembering far back is no problem.
I can still remember my apprentice time-card number from 1957
(14151) and how to properly adjust a Velocette clutch.
As to what happened this week? Not so much.
