Gonna look for mid spec, shim if it is on the tight side. I dont have extra shims to shufffle around. Have a 79 SF with 26k on the clock and have not touched it (adjusted) in 2500 miles. Still sounds quiet.

P.S. Have a couple airhead BMWs', have to check them every oil change. Simple as pie to do them, not like the cover on my XSsssss' . I love all my 2 wheeled children.Greg

Bent Exhaust Valve
I had the exact same experince with one of my XS750s I purchased with 18k miles on it.
Hadn't been run in years.....#2 Exhaust Valve bent slightly...no evidence of collision with piston or intake valve....cam timing correct.....
Eventually I noticed some chewed up links in the cam chain, thankfully as I was still assembling it. I think in my case the cam chain might have worn loose from not being adjusted, then it slipped, and someone put it back. It's all I could guess after looking at the parts.
In your case, we all don't imagine a loose chain at 2200 miles.
We're all looking forward to hearing that it's running again. It's way too beautful to sit in the garage unused.-Mike

Running great now
carbs dialed in .Took pics of timing marks as not to second guess myself if something did not seem right. I can look at the pics and at least verify the timing is spot on .
