Thanks....
My brother-in-law purchased this new at Zannotti's in Butler, PA in 1980. He passed away about 8 years ago and this has been stored in his son's basement since about 1998.
It was a "no-brainer" to buy this. It is in really nice shape...31,XXX miles.
I have already started work on the brakes (rebuilding the master cylinders and calipers) and will also replace the brake hoses.
There is the second gear problem, but I have purchased a good used set of gears and will soon get the bike flipped and sort it out.
My last Yamaha was a 1978 650 Special...

Cafe Racer???
Thanks,
Some of my friends have suggested turning into a cafe racer...and although I have seen some photos of these bikes as cafe racers (I think they look cool), these are now a piece of history...They are only original once and my plan is to keep it all original...

+1 on keeping it original. My biased opinion says stock/near stock is coolest. looking at a stock '70's era bike takes us old dudes back to when we were footloose and ridin' hard at 18 years old.79 F

Sorry to hear about your brother in law.
Sounds like you have a good idea of what needs done to the bike to restore it to its former glory, which does'nt look like a whole lot.
All the info for the gear fix is right at your fingertips on here.
Also, good choice in keeping it close to original, real hard to find a MNS, let alone in the shape yours is in.1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )

If there was one bike in the whole world I would like to add to my collection in mint condition, it would be the midnight special XS11. The only thing I'd change would be the handlebars. I love your bike! Sooooo jealous!1979 XS1100F

Your brother had it stock, you should keep it stock.
Modded bikes are more common than stock.
