      Thanks....

My brother-in-law purchased this new at Zannotti's in Butler, PA in 1980. He passed away about 8 years ago and this has been stored in his son's basement since about 1998.

It was a "no-brainer" to buy this. It is in really nice shape...31,XXX miles.

I have already started work on the brakes (rebuilding the master cylinders and calipers) and will also replace the brake hoses.

There is the second gear problem, but I have purchased a good used set of gears and will soon get the bike flipped and sort it out.

My last Yamaha was a 1978 650 Special...

          Cafe Racer???

          Thanks,

Some of my friends have suggested turning into a cafe racer...and although I have seen some photos of these bikes as cafe racers (I think they look cool), these are now a piece of history...They are only original once and my plan is to keep it all original...

Good choice for an already nice original Midnite!

+1 on keeping it original. My biased opinion says stock/near stock is coolest. looking at a stock '70's era bike takes us old dudes back to when we were footloose and ridin' hard at 18 years old.

                  Welcome Neighbor !!!

Sorry to hear about your brother in law.
Sounds like you have a good idea of what needs done to the bike to restore it to its former glory, which does'nt look like a whole lot.
All the info for the gear fix is right at your fingertips on here.
Also, good choice in keeping it close to original, real hard to find a MNS, let alone in the shape yours is in.
1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
                  1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)
                  1984 XV700L Virago (to be hot-modded)
                  1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
                  1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

If there was one bike in the whole world I would like to add to my collection in mint condition, it would be the midnight special XS11. The only thing I'd change would be the handlebars. I love your bike! Sooooo jealous!

Your brother had it stock, you should keep it stock.

Modded bikes are more common than stock.

You had the classic 1st year XS650, now you have the classic 1st year XS1100 LG, keep it that way, please ! I had the 1st XS1100 SF and put 56K on it with no problem, the high bars can be adjusted for a comfy fit.
I can give you some tips on the trans as my LH needed new gears, did it with out turning it over, PM me if you like.
                        Nice bike ! I love it ! Done };~)
