  • Where Does This Part Go?

    Hello All

    I was wondering if you can help me identify this part. I can't seem to find it on the microfiche. At one time i thought it was the rear brake bracket but that is not correct.




    Also, I have the round exhaust gaskets but I was wondering if there is supposed to be something else between the pipes and the engine? Is there supposed to be a copper washer or something other than the "Paper" gasket? Thanks

    It is the torque bracket on the rear brake of a special. Will not work on a standard.

    Nothing else needed for the exhaust gaskets.

      Hey Rev/Jared,

      "Paper" exhaust gaskets??

      Do they look like this?



      These are what the exhaust gaskets should look like, they have non-stick covers on them that you peel off and then you can stick it inside the head port. It will stick to the head instead of falling out while you put the headers on. They are metal and designed to crush and seal as the headers are tightened against the head. The old ones can look almost like the actual head material inside the exhaust port. I've meant to take and post some photos of an old head with them in there, and then after they were removed, because they fooled me the first time!

        Wish I had realized that when I replaced mine! I slathered them with silicone grease to make up stay put.

          Well....I missed the "paper" part! No they shouldn't be paper! As TC said, they are metal!

            Those have adhesive on them?!!?!?!?!?

            RAWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I wish I knew, It took me FOREVER to get those things in there without falling out

              A little silicon or weather strip adhesive is OK to use to hold them in place. I've just squeezed them so they are slightly out of round so they will stay in also.

                A bit of anti seize works as well to hold them in place and then, in theory, help them come out later.

                    Should of used a film of HighTempGrey silicone. That'll hold them in place and give them an additional seal that WON'T burn out.

                      For me, the general technique is to get the headers up against the exhaust ports with the pipe on the bottom lip, then carefully drop the gaskets in from the top and try to hold them there in place while I smash my finger several times.

                          Hey Tat/Nate and Sparkfly,

                          Nobody called me on this, but I may have been WRONG in what I wrote about these gaskets!? I don't know if it's C.R.S. or what, but I "thought" they had an adhesive on their sides....I remember the sides having paper, but I may have been mistaken regarding the presence of an adhesive layer!? And it's been a few years since I've played with them.

                          As has been stated by the others, a thin layer of silicone adhesive of your choice will help them stay in place in the head.

                              No, it's actually not adhesive. Sorry to spoil what sounds like a great idea. It's a felt-like papery stuff but definitely not sticky and not a pull off strip to expose adhesive underneath.

                              I prefer this sort of header gasket to the copper ones. I'm not quite sure why I do... Think it's because the copper ones take more torque to squash them and are not as wide. I've used a lot of these gaskets and I usually hold them in place with a blob of grease, anti-seize or, more recently, high temp silicone......
