That was a great paint job on that Katana, and for the work you put into that bike, you sold it for a steal!

I have a body shop guy paint my tanks, side covers and seat cowl (cafe fairing) but I think the spray max is an excellent idea for the frame swing arm and brackets. Even the best spray can paints are soft and scratch waaaaay to easy. I would like to try and do my own tanks and side covers with spray max as well. Right now I do all the prep work- my paint friend just has to wipe down and shoot the base then the clear. He charges me $250-$300 which is a deal because they turn out fantastic. But Id like to try the spray max as I know how to wet sand and buff...should there be any orange peel and dirt nibs.

Both of these were done with Dupli-color base a 2K clear.

I'll use a harder base next time so this doesn't happen if gas get's in under the clear..

As I said before, orange peel is inevitable with the rattle can but cleans up good after about a week of cure time. Dirt is always possible unless you have a clean room. I never had a real problem with it.

BA- is that from gas getting UNDER the clear at the fill opening? What about a thin bead of seam sealer- fuel resistant of course around the base of the fuel inlet? I do know the spray max is supposed to be automotive grade- all harderes and catalyists already added.

Yup, as far as I can tell. I doesn't hurt the clear, it just melts the color base under it and bubbles up. I'm not sure how I could seal it.

Greg (BA80)- I remember it was discussed before in another thread regarding your bike, and Nate brought it up again, but did you ever just not paint the neck, and clear the neck's metal?

That might work. If you look at the pic of the tank though, the paint is still on the neck.

I think contaminants can lurk in the crevice where the filler neck meets the top of the tank. Heating up in the outdoor sun may cause them to leach out and attack the spray can color coat. Just a theory.

That tank was actually fine until I pulled it into the garage to do some work on the shifter ratchet under the left rear engine cover. I leaned the bike over to the left and propped it on an jack stand. I was called away before I got started and it sat for about a week.

I had just filled the tank before I pulled it in the garage and didn't even think about the fuel expanding and pushing out the filler cap. Guess what?
