  • 2nd gear curiosity

I've had a skip in 2nd gear for some time. It only happened at full throttle in 2nd gear and once, around 6,500 RPM. It seems like it is shifting gears but it is remaining in 2nd & does not go into neutral. It's repeatable at WOT every time. That was 6 months ago.

Now if I am at mostly WOT it happens sometimes three times during the acceleration, never leaves 2nd gear, it just feels like a shift. No odd noises at these times, only happens in 2nd. If I give say up to 1/2 or a bit more throttle I never feel it. If I go say 3/4 throttle I usually experience it. WOT will now get 2-3 of these skips happening every time.

I've never been on a bike with the 2nd gear issue so I don't know if this is it in the early stages. Does this sound like the 2nd gear problem that needs the Dremel fix? Weak clutch?

    Thanks!

Sounds like the early stages of the dogs rounding off and slipping.

I think the dremel fix is in your future.

Every time it does that, it's rounding the gears a little more. Take it easy until you can fix it. Yes.. it sounds just like the 2nd gear problem.

Dagnabit! That's not what I wanted to hear... I wanted to hear it was the clutch or maybe a bit of undigested gruel... I'll have to research the dremel fix, I remember seeing a tutorial here before. Guess I need to flip it upside down & that sounds like real fun.

Better to know the truth than keep on guessing though. Thanks for the info.

If it helps, the XJ is better for flipping since the rear grab bar and the handle bars are very stout.

The tech tip is very thorough and lots of detailed pics. Makes it almost hard to mess up. As always, when in doubt ask a question here before you take a guess at what to do.

I'm not sure if all XJ11s have the tall set in the back but this one does. I don't have short grip for that, it came with the tall back.

I'll have to read the tutorial closely first as there's nobody I know of around me that has ever done this. Thankfully I don't have to remove the engine & split the case. Replacing the rings was enough last year. And, it turns out I probably didn't need to do that. At least the top half had a good going over and will likely be good for a very long time.

Old set of handle bars,Cinder blocks, Couple jack stands to hold it up while its upside down. And a engine lift helps out a bunch when it comes to flipping it over. And a extra person to help. Works for me. Good luck.

In one of my old posts it shows a vid of the sound it makes when it is skipping badly. I also show how I did a one man flip with some sand bags, handlebars and signal lights still on the bike. Further reading will show you how bad they looked etc. If you are interested check it out at http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31895

                            Hi Rasputin; Interesting post.

I haven't heard anything that sounds like a grind when this happens though. That video has grinding that sounds really obvious & with this, it just quickly skips and stays in gear.

So now I have a few more questions:

Is this the "best" info on doing the 2nd gear fix? http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5090

Also regarding moving the "washer", can this be done without splitting the case? I see the photo of what's to be moved here, at the bottom of the post http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...ght=dremel+fix

Also, rather than do a dremel fix, AND if I don't have to split the case to do it, would it be better just to buy a new 2nd gear and move the washer as well? Personally I'd rather just get a new gear in there.

If yes, where would I best find this gear today?

                            Thank ye!
