  • Center Stand

Finally getting the XJ near completion. When I bought this bike it had no center stand.I found one (I forget were), cleaned up and installed it. Put it up on the center stand for the first time today and found something amiss. I know that one of you guys know the answer to this.
The stand rolls over center to far, taking it off the left foot and onto the foot pedal. Do I have the wrong stand? Are there different ones though the years?
I know one of you knows the answer.

The travel limiter on the frame/stand might be bent.

There is no evidence of the limiter being bent.

        Hey Senrak,

I remember someone posting about how the Specials and Standards were different because of the size of the rear wheel.

I checked a few on the parts fiche, the 79F is different than the 81SH and the 82XJ..both of those are listed as the same. However, the part #'s for the 81 series is the same for standard and special?

          Thanks T.C.,
So it is possible that I have the wrong stand mounted on my 82 XJ.
Rather than search for another, I think that I can weld some pads on the stand and make it hit the stops a little sooner.

Wow, a grey frame seems like a bold choice. You worried about keeping it clean?

You've got the right stand (I can tell by the style of 'pedal arm' on it), so there's three possibilities as to why it's doing what it is....

                1. Worn/damaged frame stops.
                2. Bent pedal arm
                3. Wrong bolts holding it on.

These are held on with special 'shoulder bolts', and if what you have in there is smaller, it will allow the stand to rotate too far forward. Even with the right hardware, the pedal ends up almost touching the floor.

Thanks for the replies. You guys always come though.
I got the shoulder bolts and spring with the stand and they are installed. The pedal does not appear to be bent. The frame mounting points must be the culprit. Although I did not notice that they were deformed, I did need to weld a crack in that area. So maybe they were bent.
I solved the problem by welding 3/16 of an inch on the top of the stand were it contacts the stop. Problem solved. Works fine.
                  Thanks again,
