  • stuck float again

So on the way home from xs SE my #1 float acted up again. I intermittently shut off the petcock and got home fine.
Today i opened her up and sure enough it was hung up.

So i sanded down the pin and it moves smooth as silk now.

Have to tell you, after working on that Katana this summer, the XS is simple as simple can be!! I will never again complain about pulling carbs on an XS. Well, ok, not for a while anyway.

I think I can pull my carbs off in ten minutes time. I stopped using the top mount screws, and just have the airbox on via the side screws.

+1........just don't remove the screws that hold that upper bracket to the airbox.

^whoops. I did exactly that, as when I initially pulled the airbox out, I could not get the screws back into the threads (they disappeared). So, I have the bracket still there, but I taped-off the holes on the top of the box.

Taking airbox completely apart, and fiddling for several hours, the nuts CAN be re-installed. Best to just dremal cut that bracket at its bases.

A member that has not been around in a few years, DBeardslee had the pleasure of reassembling an air box once. That was when we swapped motors out for Varnae one Saturday. He swore even more by POD filters by the time he was done with that thing. He compared it to a rubics cube designed by satan himself.

I myself have put one back together, takes some careful looking and thinking, but it is not all that bad. I do as Moto suggested and as directed by Biker Phil some time ago. I trim the legs and top off that bracket where it goes over the frame, then cut the snorkel down to about 2" long. Works great for removing the airbox to get the carbs in and out.

Yep Don, that snorkel mod makes life so much easier, being able to remove the airbox before removing the carbs and fitting it back in after the carbs are back in. I don't know if you have, but I have not noticed any power difference with this modification,

Not sure if the Specials are the same as Standards, but that bracket does not really impede the removal of the carbs, plus I'd rather not modify anything that does not have to. I pull out the 10mm bolt on each side of the box, loosen all eights clamps, pull the airbox back, and carbs come right out the left side. Easy-peasy, no battery removal necessary.

+1 on Ian's reply. Over the summer, I too could remove carbs in a jiffy. Not something that I wanted to get good at, it just means that I had to remove the bank in order to redo lots of cleaning/jet replacement/float level checking, etc....

The airbox is the same piece for Standard or Special. The frame looks to have the bolt hole just in front of the tank hold down bolt location. The u shaped bracket on top of the airbox is supposed to slide over that lip at the front of the gas tank mounting spot. The bolt goes through the bracket that holds the wiring harness down and the middle drive vent tube, then through the airbox bracket, and bolts to the frame.

So the air box can not drop down until the carbs are removed and you can slide the bracket off that flange forward. This is why I cut the bracket and snorkel off, so the airbox can drop down after it is slid back off the carbs.
