  • Oil pan drain plug

I stripped it. Looking at getting an oversized one and cutting deeper threads (Will replace the pan later) but is it a 1.25 pitch or the 1.5. Seems like I remember it as 1.25, but it's been a while. Anyone know for sure?

Most everything on the Yamies is 1.25 but if your going to enlarge it guess it does not matter ? Can't say 1.25 or 1.50 for sure ?

      Tod,

If you can find a spare spring-loaded hollow bolt for the shift drum what's-it-washer that bolt will reach all the way to the second set of threads in the oil pan. Take the spring and pin out of it before you put it in the pan and don't use the lock plate that goes with the bolt. The lock plate works but it's total overkill and really annoying when you actually want the bolt to come out of the pan so you can change the oil.

It's the same thread as the spark plug

I had to read this like 10 times before I could figure out what you were talking about. Gotcha though... The bolt that holds the detent pin on the shift drum. Just so happens I've probably got a half dozen of those.. lol.

As for using the 1.5 pitch or 1.25 pitch, I don't want to destroy what threads are there with the wrong pitch, I just want them cut deeper into the aluminum.

So Randy.. you're saying to use a spark plug for a drain bolt, right?

OK... so I just changed the oil and don't want to lose it. Do you think I could use a hoist and let the bike lean all the way over to the right until just above the ground and pull the drain plug and not lose the oil?

I went to the auto parts "helper" section of the store and picked up a new bolt with the chaser slots on the end. It came with nylon washers which help assure that you are not overtightening it. The stock plug is shorter than the threaded length so you probably have good threads beyond the oem plug. The "helper" plug is longer than stock (mine is). The only issue with it is that it is a larger diameter head and it a little tough getting a wrench on it withoutout removing the filter case.

Seems to me it would just be easier to drain it into a clean pan, do your repair, then put it back in.

Yep, or for the totally anal, use a filter screen, like the ones for straining paint, to put It through before it goes in the engine. BTDT, printed the T-shirt.

I like the oversized drain plugs that have a built in drain inside of em...

You make new threads, then dont use them ever again because it has its own plug!

Tod you've probably got a dozen of those oil pans laying around and it only takes about 30 minutes to change one.

Just take one of those empty oil jugs and cut the front side out of it and use it for a drain pan to put the new oil in

It's a bit more involves with the XJ. You basically have to pull the u-joint and remove the back engine mount bolt (And usually a couple of the front ones)so you can raise the engine up enough to get to all the bolts. The frame is in the way on the XJ.

So basically none of you know... Takes 3 seconds to lean a bike over, 30 seconds if you use a strap under the tree, 60 seconds to pull the plug and reinstall, 3 seconds to lift it back up.. IF the oil goes to one side. And then you think YOUR way is easy and logical??

I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.
