The blue is going to be there unless you remove the metal that has turned blue. This is not good as it removes metal that protects the pipes, so rusting becomes a problem. Best to enjoy the blue as a hot race bike look and use Flitz to keep them as polished as posible. I've seen demonstrations at gun shows where the Flitz takes off finger prints and such to present a show blue job finish but if left with no oil on the gun over time it will rust. Unfortunately you can't oil your pipes so repeated cleaning is the only way to try and hold off the elements that will cause rusting.76 XS650 C ROADSTER

There are several coatings that can be applied to the interior of the pipes to help with bluing, but you need new, clean pipe for it to bond. If you can sandblast the inside clean, they may be worth a try.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

I just have to say that I have had pretty good luck with the polish Autosol. I will post some pics of how blue my exhaust was and how it cleaned up.
Though many will disagree with me I think that a bike properly set up will not blue single wall exhaust tubes. Mine have been in a non blue state since I polished them, and while I do not ride the miles our southern bretheren do I have put a good many miles on this bike.
My exhaust does now have a slight (very) gold hue to the upper most portions of the exhaust. I was told that using a polish will cause that.
The exhaust in the pic's is from the best running bike I have, and I get better mileage than most. So while some may think the single wall tubed headers will blue no matter what, I will respectfully disagree.
It is unfortunate that it is late and I could only take a pic with a flash as I could show you the color of the exhaust, years after their polish.
Before polish
After polishing them.

Rasputin, have to agree for the most part. Quality of the crhoming process have alot to do with whether this happens to exhaust or not. Other factors such as lean or rich can cause this quicker also. Very true, any chrome polish of any brand WILL cause the yellow/golden tint and can be confused with a lean condition. Rich, can attribute to the blue as unburnt fuel is still igniting on exhaust stroke at the head pipe upon escaping. These two pipe cond. are often confused with the lean/rich issue. BTW, those header pipes ARE in nice condition!81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Just used plain old Autosol metal polish in a tube like a toothpaste tube with a bit of elbow grease and a lot of Mothers Powerball rotations. Plan on doing another set soon so maybe I will remember to take pics when I do.2-79 XS1100 SF

single wall pipes discolor as they heat.
Yes you can polish the oxide off but it'll soon come back.
Polish enough and you'll be down through the plating to the bare steel.
And that'll discolor too. Until it rusts.
The oxide is also a tune up indicator.
Purple/blue/dark straw/light straw fading to clear chrome half way down the first straight length shows perfect carburation.
