Metal Tooth Cable Ties

We all have used cable ties for years and one is just as good as another - right? I don't think so.

I have had to use metal tooth cable ties on certain equipment that specified them and am here to say that I will not use any other kind. The regular (cheap) plastic tooth ties just do not hold up. They break and/or loosen.

Metal tooth ties are rated in the number of pounds that they will hold. The tooth itself is made of stainless steel. A smaller one of these will hold much better/more than a larger plastic tooth tie. They can be purchased at Grainger stores, and most of your home supply stores or online at http://www.elecdirect.com, Usually don't find them at automotive outlets. And yes, they cost more.

I strongly recommend using them over the plastic tooth version for greater durability. They last a lot longer.

The ones I have gotten with metal tooth were the fire rated ones and are also made of a stronger nylon. Are these the ones you are talking about. Most times the 8 inch ones are a buck each.

Thomas & Betts makes them and you can probably find them at your local electrical supply house. They aren't cheap and more than likely they won't sell them to you individually. They'll probably make you buy a bag. Also, buy the black ties, they are UV resistant, the white ones are not.

The blue ones are nuclear grade... Not that anyone will be stocking them...

In the smaller sizes (under 1/4" wide), the ones with the metal tang are all I'll use. And a good tip when using them is don't cut off the excess; instead grip it with pliers close to the body and twist it off. The tie will break off flush with the body and not leave a razor-sharp edge to cut you later.
