  • Yup, time fer a build thread "The Mutt"

go this dirty ol dawg apart and ready for a good scrubbing

remove tank, Air dam, seat ect... and a few hours of scrubby scrubby

the frame of this old bike is in exultant shape and all the rubber bushing look in good shape very little ware. Not bad for 47K miles well maintained I gotta say.

time to remove the rattle can deluxe paint job

other stuff going on: advice would be helpful

Removing front tire and replacing-in in progress waiting on tire to come in the mail

Replace tail light lens- need new lens for left side if any one can has one hit me up

Air dam- Fiber glass..... how da funk do I get this paint off without killing it? also where do I find a new wind screen, the one on the bike is cut down and cracked.

Seat- Cover/replace the metal part is good but the seat is made form an old leather jacket... not kidding

LEDs- one idea it on the front cal to trace the original pin striping with white led strips, tucked under frame will be red green or blue

    Paint Idea's: frame staying Black

fire engine red tank and air dam is what I'm leaning too, pics links welcome show me what you got! need ideas. (no I'm not going to just google it that spoils all the fun)

Also: looking for saddle bags, trunk, and mounting gear not really important at the moment.

found a full service manual online figured I would share: http://www.ringler.us/xs1100/YamXS1100Manfull.pdf

    Cheers.

Take the wheel to a bike shop, best $30 you'll ever spend

Same stripper you used on the tank, work small patches & be quick. Better yet, wet sand and paint over what you got

Seat- Cover/replace the metal part is good but the seat is made form an old leather jacket... not kidding
Easiest way is a Saddlemen's replacement cover

LEDs- one idea it on the front cal to trace the original pin striping with white led strips, tucked under frame will be red green or blue
Now that'd be a unique look. Gotta REAL big Christmas Tree to hang it on?

        Hey BZ,

I don't have a Fairing, and so I don't know the different models/styles/brands, like Vetter and such. Others will be able to tell you what brand/model it is, and whether you can get a replacement windshield, or if you'll have to make your own out of Lexan sheet, using an oven to heat it to be able to wrap it around/across the old one as a template to match the curvature, then drill the holes, use a jigsaw to cut out the shape. Lexan is stronger and doesn't crack like Plexiglass.

If you are wanting to save a little $, then take a look at the tech tips, maintanence or repairs, wheels/tires, and see the front tire change pictorial, it's for a special not a standard, but the mounting and balancing of the tire info is the same.

          Hi BZ,
Your fairing is made of ABS plastic. Wetsanding would be the best.
Base plastic is BLUE so you will know when you have taken off the paint.
Windshield is same as Vetter. I am looking for one myself. Should be mounted with plastic (nylon) bolts.

Mounting a new shield SHOULD be done using Vetter's screw/nut kit. The plastic screws and nuts from the hardware store are NOT strong enough and will soon break,DAHIK. Vetter's plastic screws come with METAL nuts, confirming the quality and tesil strenght of thier screw kit. Just a word of advice, and you'll find worth every penny!

                        WOW!

I like that red and it'll help you be seen by those crazy cagers!

Did you apply a 2 part clear coat to the tank? Hope so, Gas spills will eat it up if not.

If those turn signals are LEDs then make sure you swap out the stock flasher with one that will work with LEDs. The stock flasher needs a certain amount of load from the 27Watt bulbs, if you go to LEDs then that load changes and the stock flasher won't flash.

                              Hi BZ,
                              hmmmm? Oh, COTTER pin.
First make sure the speedo drive is lined up with the two drive dogs in by the wheel bearing and with the locking lug on the fork leg.
Then reef up the big nut. You shouldn't need to back up (or even tighten up) more than 1/12th of a turn to line up the cotter pin hole through the axle and the notches in the castle nut.
Tap the pin through so it's eye is buried in one notch; pry one leg out and bend it hard over top of the axle end, clip off the excess. Clip off the other end just short enough to bend down inwards atop the nut's wrenching flat.
The other fork leg clamps on to the axle's fat end. You slide that side in or out until the brake disk aligns with the caliper before you tighten the clamping bolt.
No conversion kit that I know of.
Troll the "XS parts for sale" forum to see what used parts are available.
Note that the Standard's front signal mounting adapters are eff nigh unfindable.
Or check MikesXS for a generic headlight and fork ears.
