  • Question about stock exhausts

Alright, there may be a very simple overlooked answer to this question but I am stumped. Either google has let me down completely or multiple muffler types were used on the 1980 models. Every picture I seem to find of 1980 (or at least that gen) xs11's have what I would call a fluted or trumpet/funnel style muffler on them. Obviously some of these are not stock, but a lot are pictures seemingly from the time period where the bikes were new. My bike however, has tapered mufflers on it. That is to say the mufflers get smaller at the outlet. I am fairly certain that my bike is stock/unmolested for a few reasons. 1. It has only had two owners, original and then a friend of my fathers whom I purchased it from. And I know he did not work on it at all. 2. My mechanical knowledge is not too notch, but I am a fairly good welder, and I can look at the entire system and tell you that this is flawless and if it was redone, it was a very serious very expensive custom job.

Through all of this the simple question is, what was the deal with stock mufflers on '80 models, and is mine stock? If visual assistance is required I'll post some examples.

    acc5928,

Go to the Home page of this site and click the [gray] color box on the right-hand side of the screen underneath the picture of the XS1100 and the site's "XS Eleven" logo.

The default [red] box shows a red 1978E Standard.

When you select the [grey] box it will change the picture of the bike to a two-tone gray/silver 1980G Standard and you can see what the exhaust pipes look like.

Sorry if this seems redundant or like I'm being dense, but if this is what came on a G, does this mean it came on all the models? For example, the H (mine) had upgrades to it and slight differences. And I believe the specials I have read did come with different mufflers on top of the other subtle differences.

Well I was going to just do this in an edit to save the double post but since I didn't realize there was a time limit, double post it is.

Here is the best I can do from my phone for a good picture of the exhaust. (Everything else is too big)

I guess upon some more relentless scouring of the interweb and the forum itself, what I could have here is a set of fat boy mufflers. Which would explain why I love the sound. (I did find it a little loud and growly for a 4cyl. Of Japanese make.) I just don't get it though, because I'm telling you this set up is 100% flawless.

Anyway, anyone able to confirm or deny my detective work?

You are correct sir, those are Harley exhaust baffles on aftermarket headers. If the 1belts &final 4, 2 & 3 pair up and exit to the exhaust then you have a pair of Jardine spaghetti pipes.pipes. If its just 1&2, 3&4 that are paired then you have a Mac. Nice bike.

The H came from the factory with the same exhaust system as all of the Special models. It is the only Standard model to share that exhaust system.

Here is a pic of my first SH. It was 100% stock with the exception of some parts painted black and the seat.

You can also see the stock exhaust. On stock systems the headers have a bolt sealing a hole in the bottom of the headers near the collectors. The no 1 header is welded to the collector, same for no 4. Two and three clamp into the collector. The mufflers are welded to the collector, and the weld is covered by the heat shield.

A picture form more of the front and the headers.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

                  What is the serial number?

It looks like an '80G to me -- nice bike, btw!

The same thing happened to me when I bought my XS. Mine is a 1980 XS1100G but it was somehow registered and titled as a 1981 XS1100G, a Year/Model that does not actually exist.

Check the serial numbers stamped on the frame head and on the right-hand side of the engine to see what Year/Model you have. If it's an '80G and not an '81H then ignore what the paperwork says when you work on the bike and order parts or you're going to be very confused. I know was.

If the serial number begins with '3H5' you have a 1980 XS1100G. If it begins with '4R1' you have a 1981 XS1100H 'Venturer' but the P.O. sold the stock touring gas tank, then cleverly disguised it as a Standard '80G.

                  Code:
                  U.S. Models

                  Year | Model | Serial# | Color(s)
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  1980 | XS1100G | 3H5-000101 | Diamond Silver, New Ruby Red
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  1981 | XS1100H | 4R1-000101 | Indigo Blue

Next, that's an aftermarket exhaust. It appears to be a MAC 4/2 with the taper tip mufflers, although a better pic will be needed to confirm.

The MAC is a decent exhaust, but stay on top of the chrome as they're noted for rusting quickly. Not quite equal to OEM for power, and are a bit louder.

Alright, I'm going to try do to this all in one message:

3phase- thanks for clearing that up, I didn't actually do any research on it, so I just assumed having an H in the vin meant it was an H model, silly me to think things would be that easy. New York State does not list sub-model or package designation on the title.

DGXSER and GLoweVA- thanks for the pics and straightening out further what the stock exhaust system looks like (especially off of the bike) it's hard to get a good angle pic for the headers and the one with them uninstalled was perfect. I would've just went on assuming the headers were stock too.

Crazysteve- I didn't really have anything to compare to for either power or sound, but like I said I am pretty infatuated with the sound this thing puts out given its a Japanese 4 banger. As for power, it's well enough for me. Took off out of a gas station one day and smacked it, wheel spun a second and when it caught it picked the front tire up. Obviously not a full blown wheelie, but I know the feeling when it happens.

And thanks everybody for commenting about the bike itself. Paid $700 for it with 38k miles and now it has a little over 40k. Only cosmetic damage that bothers me is sunfading on the bag lids. Other than that its near spotless. Was going to buy my buddy's '05 zx6r for just under 4 grand when my dad told me about this. Looked at it and decided I couldn't say no. And my back thanks me deeply!

Thanks! I thought so too. That's the price he gave me and told me if I wanted to I could just pay him about $100/month (not that it matters but I just gave him two payments of $350). Him and my dad worked together for about 20 years or so. I figured even needing mechanical work it was worth that much, but the only thing I've put money into besides the gas tank is a new starter and a K&N air filter recharge kit. He even threw in oil and a filter that he bought before he decided not to put it back on the road in the spring and he also told me he has two spare carbs if I ever need them.
