Long story short: Bike was completely apart, now is all back together MINUS instrument cluster. I have the jumpers needed to make everything as far as lights and ignition work. Turn the key on, lights come on but will not crank. If I jump the soleniod, it turns over just fine. We have checked the connections, the kill switch, starter button etc. Everything is fine. When the starter button is pushed the head light dims way down, like something is drawing from it. Is there a safety switch I am forgetting about? I thought about the kickstand switch but its up and on the center stand. It has to be something simple...any ideas?

Check your wiring to the start button. On the XJ, your headlight should go off when you press the start button; if it's dimming, something is cross-connected.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

First, check to make sure your kill switch on the right handlebar is working; with the switch turned to 'on' and the key on, you should have battery voltage to ground at both red/white wires coming out of the right side controls. If you have that, next check the red/white at the starter solenoid; again you should have voltage. If you don't, then the problem is in the 'starter cutoff' circuit. This can get involved... you really need the service manual diagram for this. If you don't have a manual, you can get one here: http://www.ringler.us/family/mybike.html
If you do have voltage there, then check that you have voltage on the blue/white wire going to the 'start' button. If you do, then check the ground wire to the right side controls (blue/black) to make sure it's going to ground.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

how do you have your jumpers connected in place of the cluster? I am having the exact same issue with mine, i removed the gauge cluster to put on a mini gauge, cant get it to turn over now with jumpers, or even with the original cluster reconnected.www.LICARIco.com
