Well here is the finished restoration with Harley Sportster mufflers on

Here is a shot of the finished product. I am very pleased with the results, and I qualified for my collector plates. Took it for a good ride about 1/2hr ago and it sounds really nice, and I've noticed no power difference. REALLy like the look of the mufflers. Took a bit of plumbing but got them on okay. Now let's hope they don't crack like some guys said theirs have!

Thanks Slow Hand. That was the culmination of 6 months work, including replacing a bent intake valve and a pile of other little things. You should see what it looked like before I started.

Thanks Haywardguy, yep, a piece of 2x4 always comes in handy to prevent too much leanover. What'd Clint Eastwood say in PaleRider? "Nothing like a good piece of hickory"

That's a nice 400 Slow Hand! I used to commute on a XS400 back before I retired, and really enjoyed that class of bike. Just enough power to get you out of trouble commuting. I see you are a fellow shooter, noticed the targets in your garage.

The little 400 was my first bike and it was a great learner both from a riding and a mechanical standpoint! I'm about 6' and 225, so the 400 was a bit small, but it was a lot of fun!

Those HD muffs are fun to mount up to the pipes, should I say adapt
When I put them on one of my 650s I wanted them a bit louder, was told just use a long rod and knock the nickle sized plug out, I knocked it loose but how to get it out. Started the bike, revved it and they came out, like shots hitting the garage door and bouncing who knows where. Got a little more noise out of them, I liked the sound. Good looking bike !!!!!

That's some nice work right there! New seat cover, no more blacked out engine, Special tank instead of Standard, shiny airbox instead of pods, new tank logos, reflectors and everything! And the scabbard and new exhaust barrel nut too, of course.
