when cold it idles at 1000-1100rpm perfect
but when its hot it idles at 1500rpm

have tried altering the the throttle stop but not helping
the carbs have been cleaned and are spanking clean.

the issue is somewhere but I cant find it

Usually that is a sign of a leak in the intake tract. Check the hoses off the rubber manifolds, as well as the caps on the unused ports. Do a search under hanging idle, and get the full scope on cause and cure. CZ

      idle fast

fitted new manifold inlet rubbers but as you say it could be the blanking rubber caps on the rubbers or the two hoses to the carbs
will check and get back when replaced

      cheers

        Idle

Might just need to be idled down. My bikes both idle at a lower RPM when cold and warm up to the 1050-1150 idle RPM.

I suspect that if they idled cold at the 1050-1150 that they would be at or near 1500 warm.

My XJ idles hot at 1500 on the tach as well. I haven't bothered doing anything about it yet, but I'm pretty sure I can adjust mine out. My last carb clean was a year ago. I'm pretty sure I need to replace butterfly seals soon, though.

The subject of the post calls it erratic idle.. is it steady at 1500 rpm, or does it bounce around?
How does the engine run otherwise, does the exhaust make any irregular noises?
Are you using the stock airbox or pods?

Is this what you're referring to as the throttle stop? Just making sure we're all on the same page..

              idle fast

              Its now fixed
After all the servicing it came down to mixture screws out of adjustment
now they are set all the same running a wee bit richer and it now goes like a scalded cat on steroids.
typical I have to put it to bed on the 10th of July because I have to return to the United Kingdom for Work.
took it for a run and idle is spot on 1100 everywhere hot or cold, motor only has 8k on the clock

now its going to bed and I hope to return next summer

Now that you did all of that work, if it were mine, I would drail every ounce of fuel out of the tank and carbs for that long of a sleep.

Very nice bike! Were the pipes blue like that before you adjusted the mixture screws? Just wondering if maybe it needs synched too. I wish my exhaust was that nice.

Very nice work, glad you got it sorted.

You probably have an established process for storing it, but yes, definitely drain the carb bowls and shut the fuel off to them. Then I would either drain the tank and oil it, or fill it and add a half can or more of Seafoam.

Or you could find some worthy lad to ride it and keep her in good working order for you while your gone.

                      bed time

each year we add some fuel additive to the petrol (gasoline for non UK owners)
STA-BIL fuel stabilizer to a tank of fuel, run the engine for 15 minutes and its ready for winter, lasts for 12 months. It stops the poor quality fuel made in the USA from turning into its component parts like water, varnishes etc.
the engine oil and filter will be left this year as its due for its oil change and filter soon at 8k, will do it next year.. If the new battery's dead next year it will go back to the suppliers for exchange,I prefer Yuasa battery's but they were hard to find at the time.
It had new NGK plugs ,NGK caps and original filter as a treat this year so next year I will bring my vacuum gauges to Finnish the job properly.
The exhausts went blue before the carbs where tuned to replace the knackered carbs because it had sat UN used for about 25 years My older brother sold a lady a 100cc moped and was given it for free,He thought it was a 250cc bike until he looked closer
My brother fitted new tires when he sold it to me 4 years ago for £350.00,cheaper than hiring cars every visit.
Its getting front disc pads next year
New fork seals were fitted twice due to wrong oil amounts and I got a spare set
Its stored in a high school workshop covered up with a sign TOUCH AND YOU DIE a Painful death on it.

Still need a battery bracket from somewhere

That is too long for fuel stabilizer I think.

Really Skids? Guess the fuel out this way isn't to awful bad yet as my Venturer has sat for almost a year at a time and not ridden. Do nothing but pop it on centerstand and throw bike cover over it in the man-cave. Battery even always good enough to re-start after moth-balled that long. BTW, never have used fuel stabilizer in anything with a motor, including lawn equip. Never has been an issue......ever. I would imagine coastal areas east/west/south require different techniques with the humidity, moisture, etc.

So Brant, who do you do for long term storage? Nothing?

lol......well, if it was anyone besides SWMBO, it would be worse than long term storage for sure.........I've never done anything, ever, for several decades now. Don't drain carbs, tank or remove battery. I have my own opinion(some of it based on fact to back it up) about battery tenders and fuel additives which don't apply to this thread. All I can say for this thread is batteries last a minimum of 8+yrs and it always fires up and runs well . This round, the Venturer has sat covered in garage since last Sept. and is still that way. I know it will fire up whenever. I just get tired of trying to get the ever so slight stumble out of it under the 4K rpm range when applying a slight throttle increase. I know....I'm anal about ALL my vehicles performing perfect, all the time. Plugs show rich in idle circuit and perfect burn at cruising 4-5K rpm. Pulls hard AND quick up to 8K and above, but that's for another thread when I decide to uncover it again. At this point, thinkin' coils on the weak side contributed by a weak stock regulator at the lower rpm range. As always, ignition usually culprit before carbs and fueling. The ST just makes it easier for me to ignore the XS, and I do, regularly. The low humidity(6-15percent) I'm sure contributes to being able to get away with doing this also. So, your exactly right, nothing.
