Until we started having to use the 10% ethanol mandated here I did the same. I simply shut it off and then started it up in the spring. Never had an issue and the bike always started and ran fine.
Now with the ethanol in the fuel I am finding that even a month will affect how the bike runs and gums up the carbs. Been doing a bit of research today (after I rode) to see what is all available to us. I do not trust Seafoam as I have not had good results with it as a fuel stabilizer. As a cleaner it rocks, just not working for me as a long term storage thing.
I came across mother Yammies fix.

Find it kind of interesting, as I do many of the newer ethanol fuel stabilizers results. There are many corrosive qualities and other problems with the ethanol that may require different ideas than what has worked in the past.
Each to his own but I will be trying a few different brands on my bikes this storage season to see if one suits me better than another.

Interesting to see different manufacturers developing their own version of a fuel stabilizer. Even tho I personnally don't use any of it, Stabil came out with a new blue colored fuel stabilizer that is more compatable with the higher alcohol content fuel about a year ago. It was brought to my attention at a local bike dealership as they had just got it in at that time and were really trying to 'push' its sales.
