  • Great Ranger REBORN!

1980 XS1100 Special “Great Ranger” at MOM Rally 2011

Great Ranger outfitted with touring bags and rack - 2012

XS Southeast Rally 2012 fully equipped

May 2013 - Oldest son, Ryan, comes home from the Navy and I leave my keys for him while out of town - he hit a patch of gravel in a curve and goes down, flipping the bike several times....

With our epic 6000 mile journey set to begin 19July2013, the process began to strip and rebuild Great Ranger in time for the trip.

Air shocks, a grab bar and rack get installed...

A Windjammer IV fairing bought from Tom Vail is installed with new gauges and Superbike bars from MikesXS...

A Standard 5gal tank replaces the Venturer 6gal tank that was beyond my skills to repair gets painted with Duplicolor lacquer and 2KMax 2-part clear urethane for gas resistance. A new Michelin Commander gets ordered for the front.

A custom stitched XS1100 touring seat bought from Bohn Frazer is installed.

Finally, black powder-coated fenders front and rear get installed along with new taper tip mufflers to replace the short turn-outs.

"Old School" 1980 Yamaha XS1100S next to "Next Generation" 2011 Yamaha Stryker

    Ready for a test ride

Nice work putting her back together John!! I like custom paint colors, so your scheme was cool looking before. Still looks nice!!!

Congrats on a job well done . . . and quickly, too

How was your son after the wreck? How did you handle it? I'm sure he felt awful.
Hill? What hill? I didn't see any hill! Why wasn't there a sign? And where are my keys?

                    Earl,

I am looking forward to sitting on it! It seems to be the best built one I have sat on for an XS11.

                    Don,

It was simply I didn't have time to redo everything custom - I took already prepped parts from the Enterprise touring build and did this one in black.

Once I have time this winter I will work on re-doing a more custom look.

                    Jon,

He was OK - mostly bruised - had ATG on so except for a scrape on his palm that wore through the glove he survived intact. His Caberg helmet took a hit and scrapes and he mostly got hit in the wallet replacing that plus the towing fees. We have been working on this one so its all good. I could not fault him as i have done very similar things in the past. Its only parts.

Thanks for the validation guys - trying to make others aware of the XS11 on this trip and jealous so a wrecked up version was not going to do.

Greg - you can go to hell sir!

That bike came out looking really sharp John! Seeing it previously in person, I just never could get past the longhorn sticker on the shield with the color scheme and side-outs. That look says "mess with the bull, U gonna GET the horn"! That backrest bar being adjustable can slide it forward, small hose clamps on sliders to keep it forward if the thumbscrew holes are jimmied up,pad it with some of your 'carry on' to take up some of the distance so's it's not out of end of travel, ratchet tie from it back to the carrier rack with rest of 'carry on' for your trip..JAT.

Thanks Brant - nice idea on the rack, but the seat but actually blocks those sliders pretty good - I have another, lower backed seat I could use to do it that way, but will sacrifice the comfort - the other does have its own sheepskin.

That seat looks pretty comfy for long hours in the saddle. As for the backrest, I find a sleeping bag standing on end in the back seat makes a great backrest.

I've also got an old throw pillow I stick in there just for a little more old man padding.

Had my tent on there too so the bag's laying down on top of that in the pic.
