  • XS1100H Vetter Fairing Question

It has been a while since I disassembled the Vetter fairing on my XS1100H and can't remember if there was a cover for the wiring that usually sits in the headlight cover. Is there such an animal? If not, is it important to cover these? Anyone devised something that will work?

I used a couple rolls of electric tape around a qt sized zip lock bag

All the front wiring plug-ins are outside and reside in a Yamaha pull-string plastic bag behind folded in headlite ears.

Oops - I thought someone jerry rigged that and took the headlight brackets off. Guess I have to DIY now.

          Hi Duwayne,
That sounds like a very workable solution to replace the Vinyl pull string bag.

Yes, Vetter made a 'cap' that fits inside the headlight shell. This works with the Vetter IV I have on the XJ. This combo lets the bucket stay in place, no need to remove it. I found the cap at a bike boneyard near Madison, WI and paid $5.00 for it.

IMHO this makes a much neater install than many I have seen. I don't know if it will work with earlier Vetters or other XS11s.

              Vetter headlight bags

Those bags are overrated. My first two Vetters did not have bags with them, just tywrap the wire bundle together, and forget it. My latest is a stock Venturer, that came with a bag from the Yam factory. I needed to check some wires up there, shortly after I got it, so the bag had to come off. Much swearing later, I got it out, fixed the wires, and the bag has been on my bench ever since. The fairing blocks most of the weather, and the lack of bag has never given me any problems with shorts or not running. Plus, it is now much easier to work on when doing mods like HID lighting.
              Don't mourn it, dump it.

Great stuff - thanks. I was worried that moisture would work its way into the connectors normally shielded by the headlight cover.

Just put a bit of dielectric grease inside all the connectors. If you have an 80's Japanese car, you may remember the connectors under the hood all had grease on them. Keeps the moisture out, and the electrons in.
Just fill the female connector, and install the male connector. the excess will squeeze out, and seal the connection from the weather. It will NOT get in the way of the connection, as the connectors are solid when installed correctly/fully.

If you do use the bag remember to put it to where the open side is down so water will not collect in it if the bike is outside. The bag will protect the plastic connectors from elements but it is a hassle to take off and on.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
