Hi Everyone,
This is my first posting here and you all seem to be pretty knowledgeable so I'm pretty sure someone here will be able to help. Here's the run down:
My 81 XS1100S had the CCT leak out of the front plastic cap and i was tired of looking at the oil spots under my bike after each ride. Looking on here, I found that the fix was as simple as pulling the CCT off, sealing it with the liquid gasket of my choice (Three Bond is what I went with), putting it back on and follow the procedure to re-adjust tension.
Everything went smoothly until after my first ride. There was no oil, but my cam chain was rattling around. I rode it back home with it rattling like a coffee can of loose change each time I had to stop and decided to tackle it the next day. My belief was I did not adjust the tensioner right.
Next day I get back out there, line up the timing plate, loosen the lock nut, loosen the keeper bolt and nothing noticeable happens. No sound, no nothing. Thinking maybe the plunger moved just slighty in, I retightened, turned the crank over a few times, and started up. No cam noise. Went for a ride, came to a stop, and the chain was rattling again. Went home, waited for it to cool, pulled the CCT off and noticed what looked like the plunger was slipping.
Thinking I stripped the bolt or something (and then really stripping it after tinkering some more), I decided to go for the ACCT option. I got one from a Raptor 660, and went through the installation process again. However, when I was installing the spring, the plunger (which I pushed in all the way) did not make the ratcheting sound I thought I was supposed to hear.
I turned it over by hand, everything seemed fine, stared it up, everything seemed fine, went for a ride and once the engine was good and warm the rattling sound came back.
I am now at a loss. I tried taking the spring back out and pushing the plunger in from the outside and I barely got one click out of it, so it is definitely against the chain guides. Could the guides be hanging up somewhere preventing them from applying adequate tension? Why is the noise coming only when the engine is warm? I thought maybe it's just time to replace the chain, but wouldn't it have been making noise before I took off the original CCT?
Thank you for any help with this one. Between this and the sticking brakes on my XS850S, I'm going nuts with no way to ride!
