    Compression was good and even across all cylinders. It was a bad plug wire. I borrowed a plug wire from my wife's bike, and it fixed the problem. Looks like I'll be getting new plug wires. Thanks for the help.

      Ok. In the "just gotta ask" category how did you borrow a plug wire on one these bikes? As the infamous newspaper puts it Enquiring minds want to know.
      If you were able to "borrow" plug wire then you must not have stock coils or wires. Very useful info to have when someone a half the world away is trying to help out.
      Not trying to give you any grief but hoping that in the future, both yourself and others asking, will try to give more complete info. The more we know the better we an help.
      Good on ya that you have solved your problem.

        They are honda cb1000 coils. Had to look up part # on coils. Didn't know they was not stock. The bike is new to me. One of the PO's must have changed the coils. I have only had the bike about 3 months. I traded a 77 xs750 special for it.
