Bypass it. I am not really familiar with the 81 and was unaware that it had the clutch and side stand safety switches like the XJ. I know that a lot of XJ owners have bypassed both because they are nothing but a problem.

It really sounds like a bad connection at a fuse or a tip over switch. When you turn the ignition on do all the correct lights, oil and neutral, come on?

If the plastic end is still on there just tie it up otherwise tape them separately.

To check for a bad connection at the fuses check at the WIRES at each end, not just the fuse itself. I may be getting a connection at the + side and the fuse will seem ok but if the connection is bad at the - end it will only show up at the wire.........the clip.

I'm speaking of the connection of the FUSE ITSELF. Be sure it's making a good connection on both ends. A little fine sandpaper works well on the inside of those clips.

Also, it's apparent the tip over switch isn't the problem. Go ahead and plug it back in because it's not necessarily a bad thing if you happen to lay the bike down.

Go back to the original thread, post 11 and do what I outlined there....

                            http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39797

If you're not getting full battery voltage in/out of the handlebar kill switch, testing all this other stuff does nothing. To check electrical, you have to be methodical; check and fix each piece as you go, jumping around testing separate bits out of order won't pinpoint the problem.

                            You should also read these:

Start where the circuit originates, moving section by section to the other end. Make sure you have voltage at each point, if it disappears between points you have a bad connection, bad switch/device, or damaged wire....

That's a grey area for me. As I said, I've not dealt with the safety switches other than I've heard that they tend to be a PITA.

I've read back through your posts and I see where Steve told you to try the 2 red/w white stripe wires at the right handle bar switch. Did you do that?

With the key on and the kill switch in the "run" position there should be full power (at least 10.5V) to both wires. You don't need to remove the switch to check that just make a small slit in the outer covering to expose the wires. There should be the 2 r/w wires and a smaller blue wire. If you have a test light with a sharp tip just poke it through the insulation and see if there is power to both as I explained.
