  • Need title in my name, orininal owner died.

My bike has not been riden since 1989, i have the title but the man who's name is on it has passed away several years ago. The most recent sticker on the plates is also from 1989. I dont know how to go about geting the bike in my name, or if it is possible without having the title signed over.

Also, i've heard somthing about some states not issuing new titles for bikes older than 25 years old, is Illinois one of them? anyone dealt with this before?

I hate dealing with the DMV so i figured i'd ask the forum first.

(In rockford no matter when you go into the dmv you can guarantee at least a two hour wait. last time i was there was for CDL Written and driving tests, it turned into a whole day event.)

A little personal info: only 2 days of school left at Kishwaukee college, so i'm soon to get back to the fabulous world of pesticide application. It pays for my toys, mainly the xs11, and woodworking.

Any info you guys have will be great. thanks.

You could apply for a bonded title (what I'm doing right now) However, it would probably be cheaper to have the eldest child sign it over to you. If there isn't one, you can just do the bonded title. It costs, but it's the easiest.

      Title

I really don't want to advise you to do something you are opposed to, but all you need is a signature and date on the old title, and a bill of sale. Usually nothing else is required. No other proof etc. You should also be able to sign the back of your tag receipt stating the bike has not been operated illegally and forego any penalties etc. Only one other thing to look at, go to a DMV office where you don't normally go, such as one who is not aware of your circumstances, if there is more than one in your town.
If your conscience will not let you do this, then call the PO's family explain the situation and ask permission to do this. I can assure you he won't care and I can almost guarantee you they want nothing to do with this, and will probably advise you to do what you need to to get it titled.
I buy and restore antique cars and bikes, I have had the same problems until a friend at the DMV advised me how to avoid problems. HTH

Had a similar problem in Wisconsin, found a surviving family member - particularly a spouse - can sign for the deceased. I bought a bike in a guy's name, he had died and his wife signed the title for me. No bill of sale needed, just the title. Requirements will vary from state to state. In Arizona the signature has to be notarized, though, and this can cause problems if the listed owner is dead. A *friendly* notary public can be a great help.....

You will need to call your DMV and see what options are available.

          Hey Buddy,

Go to "Park license and Title", and ask them.I had title issues too.The Special I bought had no title.I was able to locate the original owner, though.
They are great, and they know the way around the state law's.
I will have them working on a "home mad title" soon for my pontoon trailer. It came from Wisconsin, so there was no title on it.
Park License is on north second street in Loves Park, by the library.I can get you an address if you need one.

Or just go outside to find the owner to sign your title (wink, wink) Thats what i do in wisconsin. Ive had problems with dmv almost every time i go . Just remember to sign only in the spot for seller. I dont even put dates in till im at the counter. That way has worked every time ,no problems just solutions.
