Hello all. I was seeking help last year about motor problems. Well I took the motor down and found that I had bent two intake valves. But I did not burn a whole in a piston like I thought and the rings were not stuck. So now what to do. The cylinder walls are pitted so I believe what I need is the whole set with the pistons in the jugs. Maybe the 150 big bore on ebay? But the best price I have found is 400 to bore it out. Do I have any other options? Cheaper is better. And if jugs with the pistons in it is what I need does anyone have anything they could part with? Thanks. Dustin

You can get entire running engines for cheaper than what it will cost to repair yours... sometimes they come with the rest of the bike intact too!
If ya figure $150 for the BB kit, $400 for boring, $75 for engine gasket kit and new valves at $35 a pop ... your into about 7 bills already.
BTW, you can get a used jug and matching pistons off ebay for relatively cheap (comparatively) but then have no idea if they really came from a healthy motor (do you really trust the seller). Complete heads can be found cheap too.
Other option is to look in the parts section of the forum and have some confidence that your not getting junk parts or robbed on price...
Did the bike run prior to the bent valves or is this a project you picked up? Depending on the pitting in the cylinder you mught want to pick up some used valves from the forum and just run the thing. Take some compression readings after its back together before you decide to do all that work... just my $0.02Last edited by WMarshy; 05-09-2013, 09:28 PM.'79 XS11 F

Have you tried honing it yet? My XJ was pitted from being seized. I was able to hone 0.002" off and the pitting was removed. The bike runs great no smoke. I didn't think honing would be enough, but this is nice dense Japanese steel we're dealing with here. The pitting wasn't deep, it just looked that way."The Hooligan" XJ1100, Virago Gauge Pods, Screaming Eagle Mufflers, K&N Filter, hand made rear fender, side covers, and solo seat, round bar conversion, small headlight, tail light, and cat eye turn signals, chip fuses, rewired the right way.

It's still in spec. You have to make sure you use good instruments for measuring while you do it to keep it from getting out of round. Since the rings are chrome molly and have a lot more miles on them, I reused them. Free engine
If you can figure out a way to get the engine from here to there, I have an engine here you can have. RUNNING when taken out of the bike over the winter. Located in Watertown SD. stored indoors in heated garage. I have no need for it, but hate to just send it to the recycler. If no one takes it, eventually I'm sure I'll just have it melted down.
