  • Dreaded carb issues...

I recently have been introduced to the world of the xs1100 carb cleaning and have noticed that you very knowledgeable enthusiasts have often said steer clear of non-mikuni mains and pilots. I have just ordered four kits from Georgefix.com as his kits come with all that is needed for the 1980 cv34 carbs on the "widder" but looks like I may end up reusing my old mains instead. I know the pilots are 42.5's but with what I'm running (4\2 headers and six pod filters...my old mains may still work? Widder was not wanting to fire cold but once started she popped through the carbs til warm. Leaked gas on the floor and was flooded before I could even crank her over. Upon inspection and clean up I notice emulation tubes corroded and float needle seats the same. I will be changing the oil to rotella t 15w40 and need to know if I should put them back together with jets from the kits or old ones? Thanks in advance guys

After cleaning you're old jets up, inspect them and see what condition they are in and if they are the correct and original jets. If they are, then I would reuse them. If they are damaged, then replacement would be a good option.

+1. Jets don't wear out they just get destroyed by fools with tools.

All you really need to overhaul these carbs, unless something has been intercoursed up by a PO or...............you , is gaskets and occasionally float valves.

The key is in the CLEANING.

You may not need the rebuild kits, your problem might be solved from a good carb cleaning. I would start with a thorough cleaning first...

P.S. You have to have leaky petcocks as well as leaking float needle valves to cause the dreaded gas in oil problem...

The mains look OK and after reading all the horror stories about these carbs and the PO issues with forcing parts I was extra careful about the tear down. The PO had mangled the pilots up a bit but I was able to remove the pretty easy but wouldn't dare a reinstall of them. The emotion tube threads did suffer a bit as they were very resilient. Diaphragms and slides are in good shape so I think I'm OK there. I sprayed them with silicone and put in individual sandwich bags til reinstall. Pinesol soak and carb cleaner/air blasted all passages and ports. one thing I'm not sure of because I get mixed info on it is the actual float height of these carbs. You guys in my honest opinion, are a mountain of knowledge on these bikes and without ya, I'd be screwed for that I say cheers to you

Not sure but the petcock on my tank was left open...little gas smell in the oil fill hole. The widder has a Harley tank and no octy but does have inline filters to which I'll just change the oil for reassurance. This old girl loves her fresh blood does anyone know the best place for a oil filter and brand?

I will add to the info that you definitely will want to replace the float needle valves and seats with the ones from the kits you get.

As to the jets, I can speak from experience that the jets you get in kits from Georgefix will work well. So if you think your jets are buggered up and might not be an easy removal next time, do not worry about using the jets he sends you.
