I want to put normal handlebars on my xj, can I swap out the top tree clamp with an xs of the same year?

Should be able to use one off the 79-81 Special. You'll have to somehow close off the air holes on your fork tubes and figure out how to bolt the gauges on. Definitely not a simple swap.2H7 (79) owned since '89

The air holes will be fine with the xs11 special top clamp. I did the same thing to mine, no difference. You just have to use the xj headlight holders that fit over the fork tubes because they hold up the linked air system on the xj forks."The Hooligan" XJ1100, Virago Gauge Pods, Screaming Eagle Mufflers, K&N Filter, hand made rear fender, side covers, and solo seat, round bar conversion, small headlight, tail light, and cat eye turn signals, chip fuses, rewired the right way.

The XJ gauge pod mounting bolts are narrower than the special top clamp mounting holes. You can remove the metal bushing sleeves from the special clamp and then use fender washers and nylon lock nuts to bolt the gauges on. It will clamp down snug enough. If you want to do it better and use the metal sleeves, then you will have to make some custom offset rubber bushings."The Hooligan" XJ1100, Virago Gauge Pods, Screaming Eagle Mufflers, K&N Filter, hand made rear fender, side covers, and solo seat, round bar conversion, small headlight, tail light, and cat eye turn signals, chip fuses, rewired the right way.

The first one you posted is for a Standard, Those will not give you the right geometry. The second one is from a Special or Midnight Special and would work.
I have a set of TTrees from a special sitting in the garage. IF your still looking send me a PM we can figure out a deal.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The "normal" bars on an XJ are adjustable for width and height. Some folks do not recognize this. Yep, they are square which is a problem for some things, but I would try adjusting the stock XJ bars before I tossed them out. They are the most comfortable bars I've ridden behind. Mine are one bump higher than center and one bump wider than center.Jerry Fields
