  • 79F headers/pipes on 80G?

    Question:

Any reason a full stock exhaust system from a 79F won't work on an 80G?

    Plug and play?

I know there is some differnce in where each exhaust header mates to the engine between some models, like the length of the portion that butts up against the exhaust gasket is different or something. Any issues like that in this case?

    Thanks.

Just one issue.... look at pic 11... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37191

I'm not 100% sure when Yamaha made this change (only the 80, or did they start in late 79?) but your '80 exhaust studs will likely be too short. But other than that, the systems will interchange.

YES! The issue I was talking about is the flange length, and your info showed me why that makes a difference.

What is the remedy for too short studs? I mean, anything besides replacing them? What kind of ordeal is replacing them?

All you can do is replace; the difference is enough that the short ones won't 'stretch' enough to make it....

As far as how hard it will be to change them, hard to tell. I'd try double-nutting them first and carefully try to turn them out, but these have been known to break off. If they seem stubborn, some heat and penetrating oil is the next step....

Well, heck's bells... Found a nice 79 Std stock exhaust and was thinking of putting on my 80G that I grafted Harley muff's onto recently.

Doesn't sound like it's worth $200 to me at this point.

I asked for a few more pics, but looks good so far... Other than the stud length issue we talked about already.

Keep in mind if your inner two 'short flange' pipes are in good shape you can use those and only have to change the outer studs...

If the baffles and the rest of the exhaust are in good shape, DON'T HACK IT. The engineered exhaust is as good as it gets. If you put Harley exhaust muffs on, you will be disappointed if you want it to sound like a Harley...also the mid range will suffer or other ranges if you try to compensate. This was my experience, but the guts of my OEM muffs were gone.
