oops, wrong tire

    Mike, I answered bonz and here are the measurements. I asked if it's acceptable to have 1/4 inch clearance on each side (712 clearance)

    Fender width: 4 3/4
    712 width: 4 5/16
    404 width: 3 1/4

    These of course are rough measurements as I simply used two rulers. When I measured clearance on the 404 that's on it right now I get 1/4 inch clearance on each side. According to my measurements of the 712 it would have 1/4 also. I will be talking to the service manager tomorrow and try to get a better answer as to why the 712 would not fit.

      I haven't any first hand experience with this however a quarter inch on either side should be fine. It'll be a little tight at the top as well but most guys get by with that just fine from what I've heard and from the info we've seen in this thread. Just don't go muddin' and off road riding, you'll be good.

      It does sound like they tried to mount it, I gather they had the bike to do this and tried to put the wheel back on.

      If the wheel didn't slip in there really easy the dealers not going to try and figure out how to make it happen. Just remember you'll get further with sugar that you will get with salt, especially with service because they catch a lot of crap. Someone who comes in as nice and civil gets the benefit of the doubt.

      The only question I still have is did you deliberately order a 110 size tire, or was it after the fact you found out the 110 would work but didn't know that going into this whole deal? I.E you gave the dealer a heads up the 110 would be tight but they decided it wouldn't fit and overrode what you told them.

        Look at the clearance in the rear from tire to swing arm. In some cases 1/4" would be an improvement.

          I just took a good look at it...There's not a lot of clearance on the drive side on the swing arm with a stock rear tire....

          Anyway interesting to hear how it turns out with the dealer...

            What shop in SJ are you going to?? I've been running "wide" tires on my bikes for a while, and only have problems on the REAR. As stated, you MUST let the air out to install the 110 in front, but that's it. I do think Road Rider is WORTH the money, and the little extra work. I've ridden in my XS, pulled the tire and had them install the new tires all in less than 1.5 hours. The only time it took a little longer was with the bead locks on the '78, as he had a HARD time getting the tire on correctly.
            If you need a little "local" advice, I'm just over the hill in Aptos, and my number is in the top right of this reply.

              I put a Shinko 712 110/90/19 on the front of an XJ11 a couple of weeks back, practically had to use a shoehorn to get it in there but it fit with no rubbing. On my Special and that XJ, I can install that tire no problem without letting any air out. I'll tell you, that tire looks so much better on there and really fills up the fender. The 100/90/19 is so much skinnier/shorter doesn't look as good and wears out faster, JMHO, YMMV.

                Hi Eddielo,
                The tire "grows" in service due to heat build up. The critical clearance is between the top of the tread and the fender. I and many others have run 110 on the front with no problem..

                    Ray, I bought the XS from San Jose Yamaha on 13th St. Same place where I bought the XS that was on consignment from a well-known rider on this group. His name is Ray also.
                    If I knew how and had the right tools to remove the tires I would have taken them to Road Rider.
                    I would be glad to pay someone $60 to R&R my VStar tires. I'll let RR do the installations.

                      Phil, are you talking about shoehorning it in on your FJ forks?

                        Nate, no, the XJ was Cobia's. On my 79F with the FJ forks, that 110 has plenty of extra room.
