  • Driveshaft removal question

    Hi ya'll,

I am so glad I found the site. It has been instrumental to solving some issues regarding my 1100 1979 XF/ SF. I recently acquired it running decent and on the road with a parts bike for $1000.

I am trading the parts bike to a 1100 XS enthusiast. I met him while looking for a bike that had sold the one he offered just b4 I got there for appt. He is walking me through carb service/syncro and jetting (for installation of new intake boots and individual air filters)and heat tape wrapped exhaust , valve adjust/shim and timing. I didn't want to take it filthy so I am doing a "Joes Garage restoration"

I could go on but not right forum so here is my question??

I have a Clymer service manual and some details are definitely overlooked in regard to clear instructions... Here may be an instance of putting the horse b4 the cart. It stated after removing wheel etc... remove 4 bolts from coupler. Good luck for me now with tolerance between middle gear and boot. I have not 2 12 mm wrenches with one to stop spinning(?) or perhaps is there a hole in shaft and housing to put a drift in to stop turning(?) Should I put thread lock on bolts upon reassembly?

Thanks in advance for insight. Hopefully I will figure it out but today my schedule is finish painting 3 more sides of the rims. I am hoping to have her back up around May 1st,

    All the best,

A block of wood through the spokes, a hammer handle works good. You'll need to slip the wheel back into the splines though.

Go to the parts store and get yourself another 12mm wrench.

If you put the wheel back on temporarily, you can put a bar or a piece of wood thru the spokes to hold the U-joint coupler from spinning. The boot can be pulled rearward and held there with a bungee cord(s) to gain access to the 12MM bolts. When reassembling, I always use a drop of threadlock blue on the threads.

LOL.. Put the bike in gear. Loosen the bolt with one wrench. I like to use a rubber hammer on the wrench to get it broke loose. Shift the bike in neutral, spin the yolk to access the next bolt, put it back in gear, etc..

Just don't forget to retighten them when you put it back together.

Putting it in gear works too but sometimes they are so tight the engine will turn.

Yeah, that's why I use the rubber mallet. It's like an impact. Works every time.

And who'd be dumb enough to not tighten those bolts up on reassembly while in the middle of nowhere on a roadtrip east...??

Yeah, your right. That would be as crazy as leaving the plug loose on the middle drive wouldn't it?

Nice bike. Pic was a bit fuzzy, but any Special with a touring package on it has my attention!

Question for you: How close was/is the clearance between the fairing mounting bracket and the highway bar/hoop?
I've noticed that on my SG I have a clearance issue and I have to 'push' the highway bar down about 1/4 - 3/8" to get the fairing mounting bracket to flush up to the frame.
Then again, your highway bar/hoop looks to be a little different than mine.

It seems that you've been putting a lot of time into it. I wish I had the space (garage) and the time to do a teardown like that.
Maybe, since the SG is finally up an running, I can do this to the G.

Thanks for the kind words in regard to slideshow

I reference to Fairing mount. I am not at my barn now but I believe the fairing mount was modded. The bike was dropped and parts bike must have been a SG(?) T.C Grisom referenced my engine vin # a (SF) so I am going to assume that was a Special?? Was the SG a factory touring model?
I was going to ride it as it was for the season. I contacted the gentleman who had listed a bike I looked at from CList. I asked if he would tune and walk me through and be there when I need him if I traded him the parts bike that I have no room for. I raped off the good chrome side covers, emblems newer braided brake lines, the much sough after battery and electrical side covers, the new tire (Metzler with the nubs still) and new looking cables. I had 3 recycling bins full of the parts bike. I went through and installed all fasteners and reassembled what I could and organized and packed and got down to a large UPS box for him. He seems like a great guy and he just buys, fixes and sells 4 cylinder Yamahas primarily.
As for my Joe s garage restoration. They say the devil is in the details and I'm the devil. I am doing it the best I can with what resources I have. Luckily I have been putting together bushel baskets bikes since I was about 12 and I think I'm gonna be 49? My last bike 6 yrs ago was a Russian DNEPR 2 wheel drive sidecar rig as in my avatar. It was a lot of fun but top speed was 65 and was always wrenching on and the metalurgy sucked. (there goes another snapped bolt etc.) Everywhere I went it was a head turner and if I stopped somewhere It was a half hr. talking to peeps.

I apologize about fuzzy pics. I broke my camera and my phone isn t that great. I wish I had taken more b4 but stuff changes fast around here especially when you have multiple personalities. I ll be posting a complete recap with pics when I m done and will keep updating pics. The ones posted were the teardown. As you can see I was quite lucky and got one in great shape running, just broke in at 38,000 miles. I screwed up and done good as I had no idea that I had bought the first Superbike as it seems.

                            Thank you all,

                              To answer your question??

I think I have about 50 hrs into it. I probably got another week or so till shes up and running. Between paint, intake boots air cleaners, tank sealer, gaskets, windshield refinisher, rewiring with AWG spade fuses, a head unit(antenna speakers)Exhaust tape and ss zip ties, handgrips, lever/cable boots, oils/lubes/moly paste, lots of penetrating oil, degreaser, brake cleaner, sandpaper, 2 smoked wire wheels and I got a new Bell Mag 9 Helmet all for about $500. I am off to Red Coat seal the gas tank to get closer on with this puppy.
