Is it possible to take apart the tach to clean the inside? Mine is all fogged up on the top half.

I believe a few people have done it. Use the search tool some and you might find some threads about it and general warnings while you wait for someone with fist hand experience...

The XS gauges are sealed units and not designed to be disassembled. It can be done, but usually will leave you with a somewhat damaged looking trim ring on the gauge as it's extremely difficult to get it off and re-crimped on without denting the ring. Do a search, there's multiple threads about this.

If appearance is important, you'll be better off just getting another gauge IMO...

If money is not a problem, there are also companies that will take old gauges and refurb and clean then. It is usually a couple hundred per gauge though...

If it's just fogging up, take the guage off the bike, take the outer housing off. With the rubber plugs that hold the guage lights removed from the gauge, put it on a tray face down and heat it up with a hairdryer. Nearly all of the moisure that was trapped in there will evaporate away.

I have not yet tried a tach (but may need to on the SG), but I have opened the speedo before. You can use a small screw driver to carefully pry the trim ring back to open it. The under edge of the trim ring looked like holy terror by the time I was done, but it went back together, and the rubber seal hides that under side, so you would never know to look at ti in place.

                Hi Nate,
like they all say, yes you can but it's a bitch to do.
                What's it fogged with?
If you or the dreaded PO was fizzing in there with spray lube a teardown is the only way.
If it's moisture, low tech is a hair drier or a ride in the oven at a tad under boiling point.
High tech is a ride in a vacuum chamber.

Im not sure what it is. Looks a lot like the inside of a smokers car window that hasnt cleaned it in a couple years. Definitely not moisture. Looking like my best bet is to wait and find a replacement.

QD Electronic Cleaner evaporates without residue. Might be worth shooting inside to see if it cleans it.

The nippers pulled it off just fine for me on a square gauge too. Just a bit more care needed on the corners. As for the fix I am not sure but I imagine it would be ok.
