  • got alot done on my bike this weekend with help

i (mostly t.c. i helped) was able to get alot of stuff done to my bike to get her ready for a heavy riding season. i am planning a few long trips this summer and decided to fix the bike up some with some much needed tlc. me and t.c. (topcat) started on my bike saturday at around 9am and didnt finish till around 8pm. the main thing we were doing was the tranny fix (my first gear was slipping). i had bought an extra transmission on ebay for $25 so that t.c. could dremel them ahead of time so that it would make the fix go alot quicker since the bike is my daily driver. and since we were in there i decided to get some new clutch springs and change them as well, and i had gotten two new tires and t.c. had offered to show me how to change them while we were at it. we got alot done on saturday. here is the list of what we got done
1.changed the old gears out with the new dremeled gears. t.c. had also moved the washers, and we had a pita of a time getting the gears in with the washers moved, but eventualy dropped into place.
2.had to fix a stripped oil drain plug
3.replaced my clutch friction plates with an extra set T.C. had since mine were under spec.
4.deglazed the steels (which were not to bad)
5.replace the clutch springs (mine were out of spec)
6.installed one of t.c.'s sofa (spin-on oil filter adapter) and new oil filter
7.had to modify my final drive filler bolt (i had added a new car drain plug and you couldnt get a wrench on it to remove)
8.remove and install new tires on both front and back
9.put every thing back together with new yamahabond gaskets (love the stuff)

that was saturday, and today all we had to do was to put the battery back, reinstall seat, put carbs back on, and put all fluids. and get her running and take it for a test drive. once everything was back together we did a compression test since i haddnt done one since i got the bike. all were around 140 except for no.2 which was at 30 (engine cold). so we then took her for a test ride and checked the compression again and they were all about the same around 140. the bike rides like a new bike and i couldnt have done any of this without this site and especially T.C., and for those of you that have met t.c. and know him here is a pic of him riding the hardtail beast i call my bike on the test ride.

i am sure i have forgotten a few things that we got done on the bike but i think we got alot done.

      Hey John,

I was glad to "assist" you in your learning adventure into the heart of the beast! Yeah, you covered most of the stuff we did. A few other things:

Removed your old Oil cooler adapter/radiator.
Replaced a rounded/rusted off front brake bleeder valve, and bled the front.
Found that you need to replace your rear brake pads VERY SOON.
Cleaned up corrosion from your battery cables/grounds, applied copper di-electric grease.
YOU disassembled the clutch housing throwout bearing/lever and regreased!

We forgot to put on a HORN. I'll put them in the SUV along with your other parts/oil and such when I drop by in a day or so.

Charles, I've got your gears that John dropped by, and I'll work on them during this week and get them back to you soon. I've got to prepare for a training session I have to participate/give this coming Saturday. I've ordered another batch of fuseblocks, I still have the 2 I set aside for you and will bring them by also.

Yeah, I make everbody's bike look small!!!

I did take John's "Beast" for a little jaunt a few blocks down the street and back, and it did ride fairly decently for a hardtail...he has a coiled spring seat which helps, along with running only ~25 PSI in the rear tire...yeah, yeah, we know it will increase the wear of the outer edges of the tread, but he's got a new Shinko 712 on there now, so it will be interesting to see how it wears/performs, etc.!

Another interesting affect of his hardtail mod is that it angles the frame downward in the back, which also rakes the steering neck and so I noticed that his steering is even more heavier than a regular XS11 because it has more trail now! A lot different feeling than my crash modified sport bike type steering angle of only ~2" of trail!

Another interesting thing about his bike was the severe Scalloped wear pattern on both sides of his old front tire...it was a Kenda Challenger, and was wondering if this increased Trail/rake to the front could be a causitive factor in that bad irregular wear pattern??? Any thoughts/experience??

        Hi TC,
what John needs (what we all need) is a 139 dB Stebel-Nautilus air horn

        http://www.twistedthrottle.com/stebe...lack-or-chrome

Even though it's painted screaming orange my sidecar rig seems invisible to car drivers.
        Until I trigger the horn.
Then they're lookin' all around, Where's the semi? Where's the semi?

and i did get to take GODZILLA (T.C's bike) for a the same ride, and wow that bike has alot of get up and go (big bore kit installed), and like t.c. said about my bikes steering his was like having power steering and mine not so much. and it is a pretty tall bike. perfect fit for him, not so much for my short legs. but it was a very good riding bike.

charles: once you get your gears back let me know, and i will help you get yours up and ready to ride.

That is a great accomplishment! What many dont realize or dont even think about concerning the second gear fix- Local competent shop here in Holland MI said they do crotch rocket engine second gear replacements for the stuntaz. Customer brings in the engine and the shop does a bench top repair with all new gears. Bill ends up well over a grand. Great job to the both of you with kudos to TC for his sharing his skill!!!!!

What John forgot to add was after he got done Sunday, he came by my place and helped me get the donor engine into my SG.
Tightened up all the mounts and then we then hung the pipe/mufflers on.
I pulled put the stock CCT and showed him what it looked like on the inside and then showed him what the ACCT one looked like.

Oh, he forgot to add that he put some chrome tips on those pipes of his. Baffles didn't quite fit, so some modification needed there.

I think Sunday after he got home, he said he was going to weld repair a motor mount for Charles.

Anyway, it was a busy weekend for all of us here in the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area.

So what is the "riding season" you speak of???

About the only thing that keeps my bike home is pouring rain and collecting snow! I have gotten some SERIOUSLY funny looks when I have pulled up on my bike in 12F weather... Not to mention it usually takes 30 minutes for my balls to drop again!

i dont really like the cold and dont really have any good cold weather gear, so winter is not really my time to ride.
