  • Still #2 Carb Problem

Well I got new wrapped headers and mufflers installed today. Installed the carbs and she fired right up, however didn't sound quite right. Hooked up the sync guages and got all carbs synced well. Noticed it didn't run quite right. Started pulling plug wires. No change with #2 wire unplugged. Swapped with #3. Still dead on #2. Swapped my extra carbs on, didn't run the best, but she did die down with the plug wire removed.

So now I know it's the carbs. Thing is I have cleaned them 3 times completely torn down. I can't figure it out. I want to keep the '79 carbs(spares are '80). The #2 body is currently soaking in pine sol. If it persists after I reassemble I may be looking for a #2XS400 carb body. Anyone have a similar problem? These things are squeaky clean and I only have trouble with #2the with these carbs. Valves are all newly adjusted to spec and I got 110lbs compression on all 4 today.

Did you remove the emulsion tubes? Did the down tube on that cyl heat up at all, was the carb full of fuel? please give more info

I did remove the emulsion tubes. I actually thought I had found the problem as I had replaced the tube in #2 some months ago because the main jet threads were tore up. So it was the only one with a new tube. Upon closer examination I noticed the new tube had slightly smaller holes. I chased the threads on the old tube and reinstalled the carbs. Same thing, no change.

The header gets warm, but not hot like the others. It is warmer than just convection however.

I went down to check out the soaking carb and noticed something strange. In the pail was a small(.5mm) hemishperical piece of metal. Looks like aluminum. Funny thing is that I found the same thing when I removed the idle mixture needle. It was inside the needle housing. Strange thing is that there are no threads on the bits if metal.

I was getting no change when adjusting the #2 mixture. And no, the tip is intact.

And yes, seemed like as much fuel as the others when I drained them.

Seems like that #2 has a problem, could be just a little bit of cr*p or plugged idle/slow speed jet track. On my first XS650 I was afraid of the carbs and got them working using a partially striped bread tie worked it into the shaft in the idle mixture screw and up from the pilot. All of a sudden everything was fine.

          Good Luck ! Don };~)

            Plugs

I know you switched the wires, but what about the plug on #2, you could have a dead plug. the fact that the carb was full of gas and you had "no" fire from that cyl. makes me think it might be the plug The small pieces of alum. are strange a should have come out your last cleaning IMHO

I agree, the metal pieces are strange. Replaced plug and had "#2 running with spare carbs. It is a carb issue.

JAT, now you have them off, why not switch the jets with the sister carb in the rack and if the problem moves, its the jets, if not, its the carb body

                  Hey Conquest,

Okay, you took it for a ride so you were using the mains hopefully, and the #2 pipe was just warm. So...the problem is affecting both the pilot circuit and the mains...otherwise I would expect the pipe to be quite hot running on the mains if it was a pilot circuit problem alone.

I know you've synched them, but have you checked for a vacuum leak, both at the butterfly shafts, but also the vac. adv. hose, as well as the #2 intake boot synch port/cap. See if the synch port tube itself is loose, as well as the port cap hardened?? Also checked for pinholes in the vacuum slide diaphragm and slide alignment? Also checked for vac. leak in the fuel enrichener plunger O-ring? Just a few other thoughts.

A photo of the little 0.5mm hemisphere thing would be nice, but almost sounds like a press in seal that's come loose??
