    She lives !!!

Friday I went to put the tank on and some gas in it, and wouldn't you know it, the petcocks leaked! So I took them off the tank and noticed the PO hadn't stripped all the paint off the seating surface where the o-ring sits, so I cleaned that all up and back together.
I was still waiting for the Spark plug caps, so with the G down, I 'borrowed' those caps and got the electrical finished.
Put the tank on and damn if one of the float valves got stuck and gas started coming out of the air box.
Took the carbs off and saw it was #3, so I check the float valve and the little spring keeper had rotated so it was hanging up the valve.
See my other thread about the pilot jets and my little experiment.
Put it all together and she fired right up on 1/2 choke on the first crank.!
Got her sync'd and read to ride.
The front tire was way low so I got her to the end of the driveway to use my little car compressor to fill it up and the tire came off the bead.
I pulled the wheel off so I can go get someone with a bigger compressor to fill it up.
She is so ready to ride.

      WHOOO WEEEE!!!!!
Thanks to TC and his compressor, my front tire is good to go and wow does she GO!

Pulls hard through all the gears and strong up to red line.

I may have a little issue with first gear...
It seems while when really hard in 1st, it seems to skip every now and then.

But then I guess I really don't have to use 1st that hard.

I'm keeping the fairing off for now so I can enjoy her more at XSEast.

my first gear was doing the same thing that is why i did the gears, and now she is 100%. mine started off just doing it every once in a while when i would get on it from a dead stop, then started to do it more frequent.

          Hey George,

Glad to help. Sorry the engine had a weak 1st gear, but I had never tried to use it when I got it years ago! I've got John's old gear set, so I'll be able to grind them before hand, and then after we get back from XS East we can do the gear swap/fix on it for you during a weekend. That's an 81 engine IIRC, and surprisingly I've read that folks with the later models have 1st gear start skipping on them first, but 2nd wasn't far behind.

                  Burrrr

I want to know who's big idea it was to leave the fairing off for the trip to XSEast?
"Yeah, George, the twisties will be more fun without the fairing"

At 48F this morning, the commute to work was painful!

Okay, I'll suck it up like a man! (like a real motorcycle rider!)

I only noticed the 1st gear slip when I was REAL hard on her during take off, and then it only did it like 2 or 3 times before I had to shift to 2nd.

Other than that little hiccup, the engine is perfect. Starts on the first crank, purrs like a kitten and no bad vibrations or surging.
I'll have to get a few tanks thru it before I can judge the mileage, but I have a good feeling about.

She needs a good bath and detail, then I'll post one last pic for this thread.

ps. just noticed, I've got to change my signature!

Nice to see it when someone CORRECTLY removes a motor from one of these scoots and doesn't try the 'lay on its side frame removal' scenario. I'll refrain from any comments about the latter method.

Although I thought that laying it on it's side may be a safer/easier way to go, I thought it would be too much trouble getting the bike ready to lay over in the first place. Turn signals, side covers, handlebars, etc. I didn't want to think about bending/damaging any of those things.

With the jack underneath and the 2x4's to slide the engine out the right side it went fairly easy with just me doing it. Like I said, I wish I had planned it out a bit more and had the ramps at the same height as the 2x4's to make it even easier to slide the engine all the way out.
