  • Looking for Coil substitutes

Okay, trying to research to see what's available to put in the SG.
Obviously any stock 1100 coil will work (1.5ohms), (81's are 3ohms, so jumper out the ballast resistor).
Are there any other yamaha or other brand stockers that may work/fit?

Been looking at the dyna or accel aftermarket ones, but new ones are way too much for my budget.
So, been looking on ebay for some used ones and I'm trying to figure out which ones are compatable.
I've seen that Harley's also use the Dyna's, but since they are v-twins and have only 2 plugs instead of 4 can I use 2 of them for my bike?

I'm still trying to figure these dyna's out. They've got many different colors and I'm not sure if that's part of their specifications, or just styling.
Example, the green ones are 3.0, but i've also seen some black 3.0's too.
On most pics I've seen, the ohmage is right on the spine of the coil, so that helps, but will both secondary posts fire together at the same time?
(wait, don't answer that... of course they have to both fire, when would one fire and the other not, there's only one primary...)

    Here's what I'm looking at:

Hi, my name is George & I'm a twisty addict!

    80G (Green paint(PO idea))
    The Green Monster
    K&N A/F, TC's fuse block, '81 oil cooler, TC's homemade 4-2 w/Mac Mufflers, Raptor 660 ACCT
    Got him in '04.
    bald tire & borrowing parts

    80SG (Black w/red emblems & calipers)
    Scarlet
    K&N A/F, TC's fuse block, WJ5, Shoei bags, Raptor 660 ACCT.
    Got her in '11
    Ready for the twisties!

Hi George, they look like the same coils I used.

Check post #1489 in this thread: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...27014&page=100

Are they the 3 ohm DC1-1 Dynatek ?
1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
    1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)
    1984 XV700L Virago (to be hot-modded)
    1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
    1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

George, I have used the VF1000 coils on a few bikes now. They work great, fit well, and are easy to wire up.

Thanks for that link Schming. They say 3 ohms on the spine, but I'm not sure if they are DC1-1's or DC6-1's. If I can get them cheap enough I'll go for it.

Thanks DGXSER, Now I've got to go looking for the VF1000 coils on ebay.

So, the next question is does it really matter what the secondary resistance is?
        and,
Why do we use the 5k resistor caps?

I know the basic theory behind how our inductive ingnition system works, but I'm a little fuzzy at to the specifics for the values.
(Ps. I used to be an electrician in the Navy, so wires do not intimidate me)

Secondary needs to be at least 15k if you want similar performance. The 5k resistors in the caps is to cancel noise freq issues with car radios and such from what I have read.

Good to know your not afraid of wires. The VF1000 coils have male spade connectors, so you have to make up a connection wire to go from those to the wiring harness connections. I have figured out the connections are different between the 80 and 81 XS11 models. The 80 model used bullet connectors for both + and - coil wires. The 81 model used a two wire connector for each coil. There is a write on these coils on the UK site. I have a set in shipment to me now for the SG, I will put together a write up on the process when I swap those out. Should be next week some time.

I too have noticed that the '81's have a plug for the harness. I was looking on Ebay for the stockers and saw those and said WTF.
Looking at the part numbers, the '81's are still available and are also used in some of the XJs.

While those will work. The benefit of the VF1000 (they are on other models as well) is replaceable coil wires. I believe all of those have the same "built-in" plug wires. All I need to do to replace the wires in the Honda coils is order some 7MM solid copper core wire. The coils on Fleabay typically run about $40 with shipping.

HERE is the wires I purchased for my coil install. This one set of two wires is enough for all four plug wires.

Your pic above shows the DC1-1 coils.

Here is a pic of the DC6-1 coil: http://www.ebay.com/itm/DYNA-DYNATEK...ce1a8d&vxp=mtr

The latter mounts differently and I haven't seen anyone useing them although I'm not sure they wouldn't work.

Have you checked out the possibility of coils from MikesXS?

                  http://www.xs11.com/xs11-info/tech-t...l-upgrade.html

TC also posted about using the Green coils:

                  http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29127

I put Accel coils ($200) in my XJ, but definitely plan for cheaper options for the next set of coils I need.

Both of Mike's black and green coilsare known to fail early, the balck something like 5000 miles and the green somewhere around 12000 miles. Get name brand if you go with new ones, plus they come with a warranty.

The black coils, a local XSIVE had on his bike and failed within less than 5k miles. I just this summer changed out a set of the green ones from Mikes on a different local XSIVEs bike, he had less than 10k on them, more like about 5k.

I agree about the MikeXS coils. I'm staying away from those.
I'm thinking about going with either the VF1000's or the Dyna DC1-1's. (Now I've got to find some 'used' ones that I can afford)
That link that DGXSER showed for the Z1 wires look great and for $17, hell yeah. (and red really works with Scarlet's color scheme)

I just happen to see THESE on the bay. I always look to see they include the wires. They go through a water proof cap that has three components. Buying the components of the caps can add another $15-20 to the price time you ship them.

Mine left Knoxville today so hopefully they get to Cincy by early next week.

Those wire are short. I always use new wires. I would add new plug caps if yours are older.

The reason I always make sure the wires are there is to be sure I get the cap/seal assembly with the coils.
